Most intelligent birds are comparatively high-maintenance pets. For one thing, if they become depressed or stressed, they begin plucking their feathers, and once they start, they never stop. Most intelligent birds are really fucking loud, and will screech for a variety of reasons, from wanting to hear your voice, to wanting you to spend time with them, to wanting food, and sometimes, for no reason at all. My bird will occasionally fall off her perch at night. She lets everybody know when she does. Furthermore, training any bird is a bit of a pain. Depending on the size of the bird, some birds have enough bite strength to break fingers. That being said, they very rarely will actually bite to do damage. They're more likely going to bite to say "Stop that, you cunt." Finally, some intelligent birds (namely the Sulphurr-crested Cockatoo) are really fucking neurotic, and most will be very particular as to who they do and don't like.

All that being said, the most intelligent "low-maintainence" bird would probably be the Senegal Parrot. They live about 50 years, are comparatively independent, the perfect size for almost any household, and are fairly well trainable. I'd recommend doing quite a bit of research prior to purchasing any bird, on both the species and handling, as most birds will require some training specific to their species.

They seem like interesting pets. I have huskys, so I know what its like to have a pet thats loud and opinionated lol

You got any tips/pointers for anyone interested in getting a husky?
#35 - theacespecialist (09/11/2014) [-]
Far as tips go, try not to leave them alone too long, dont leave food down ANYWHERE, and talk them. They know what you're doing and like it. Mine sort of talk back in a way when you address them.
#33 - theacespecialist (09/11/2014) [-]
Mmmmm. Well its not like just going and getting a dog. First off, like I said, huskys have opinions, and they have lots of them. In my opinion, they are the smartest dog. Leave them alone, ignore them, even laugh at them (not shitting you) and they wont like it. Mine ate my entire kitchen floor (linoleum) and a few pieces of furniture. They're smart enough to get into just about anything and willful enough to do it. Think ferrets in dog form. But, if you wanted a dog thats an honest to god member of the family, husky is what I would recommend. I think they're great, you just have to be ready to deal with them. They're also pretty independent but I wouldn't say hard to train. But if they dont like you they probably wont listen to you either.

damn. thanks for the info. yeah i live in an apartment with other people around me so a loud bird would be a no go. but yeah, i will do some research if and when i seriously consider getting a feathery friend
User avatar #24 - Anonomousthirteen (09/11/2014) [-]
I forgot to mention, the Senegal Parrot is a relatively quiet bird. But yeah, birds are great. They're like cats you can train like a dog, and is also capable of flight.

Depends what you are/aren't looking for. Typically the larger the parrot, the more high-mantainence they tend to be. However in my opinion they are more intelligent and regal.
