Brown was a biologist who observed particles in fluids and noticed that these particles change direction without reason it seemed, which he found odd. Later, Wiener would make this concept consistent. The prof who I did my bachelor thesis for researches in this area.
Another application of the Brownian Motion would be stock market (the graph even looks a bit like a Dow Jones chart, doesn't it?) but it's mostly used in physics (e.g. osmosis and diffusion of substances) as far as I know.

A Brownian Motion (or Wiener Process) is a centered stochastic process with Gaussian distributed increments.
In other words, you start a graph in 0 (i.e. "centered") at time 0 and each step you add or substract a random (determined by the Gaussian distribution) value. See the picture.
I can't explain it very well in English and even then it's quite hard not to fall in "maths language" too much.

No, that makes good sense, thanks. So, what are the applications of this? Just theoretical processes?

Racial tensions are a bitch to deal with, especially since a lot of people are total bigots and only show their nature online or in their own social circles, including stereotypical racism-obsessed liberals.

Do we still need it? I'm going to say qualified yes.
Its much less than it was, and its still dissapearing, but just last week we had a complaint from this company that they don't trust the guy we sent knows what he is doing and wanted another guy.
Guy we sent has two masters degrees and seven years experience. They never even talked to him, they simply saw him being black and filed a complaint.
So racism is not gone, its just shrunk. And in some states its better than others.
I'm going to say another decade or two and laws like this will be surpassed, but right now, I understand why they exist.

Fair enough. I live in England and racism (at least where I live) is basically unheard of. I don't personally know, or even know of, anyone that is. I've heard stories like that before, but I didn't know how prevalent they are
