There was a spoon on my desk and not a fork. I had two choices: I could either go downstairs, grab a fork, and get questioned as to why I needed a fork, or I could use the spoon. Do you want me to go get a fork?

You're very welcome!

Though you're definitely right about the over playing some of the "bigger hits" on moving pictures (thanks for running that through my head). I think it plays a great impact on how we think of not just the first four tracks on moving pictures, but all songs in general if we over listen to them. Hearing the same thing over and over again does get tiring.

Like I said before though, their music is so vast and covers many different categories. Take Clockwork Angels for example, it sounds a lot heavier compared to Moving pictures and you can tell just by listening to each individual album by Rush that they tried deviating away from the last by including some new concept into their style of music. Ultimately I think this is why some people have a hard time appreciating all they have to offer as musicians because of how broadly they cover the music spectrum, but that's just my opinion.

I've seen them live three times and each time they seemed to be far better than the last. As you can tell I love Rush, but I don't really talk about them much because I don't know many people who have a relative interest in their music like I do. So I also thank you for giving me the opportunity to try and analyze your questions earlier. I enjoyed it!

It took me a while to appreciate all they had to offer because of the complexity that comes with them, but in the end I think I can safely claim that they are by far my favorite band. Besides, if it weren't for Geddy Lee I don't think I would have picked up a bass guitar in the first place. Which has me thinking that playing an instrument might influence why I think so fondly of them, but again that's just a thought. Thanks again!

Cheers!

I mean, the first 5 tracks are basically a Rush Greatest Hits collection. But it was also released in the right place at the right time. It was the one Rush album that appealed to the general public more than any other. 2112, Hemispheres, A Farewell to Kings--they're all great, I love them to death, and you could argue that they are better than Moving Pictures, but they're a bit more progressive than most people are accustomed to.

I think the biggest reason is that Rush is fairly underrated as a rock band in comparison to other popular bands of their time and their most renowned song (Tom Sawyer) happens to be on this album which is why its seen as an impressive feat of their accomplishments. Speaking as someone who listens to Rush on a daily basis I can say that while I do love this album, they do have a lot of other brilliant hidden gems that people overlook.

I can understand why though. When I first started listening to Rush, Tom Sawyer was the first song introduced to me and then I listened to most of their moving pictures album to familiarize myself with their music. I think this is the point where people either decide to continue listening to them or not because let's be honest here, they do have a fairly unique style which I feel some people have a hard time finding an interest in. Sometimes I try to introduce my friends to their music and most of them know Tom Sawyer so I might show them popular songs like Working man from their first album or Spirit of Radio from Permanent waves and usually they don't seem too interested.

Again, I think once you learn to appreciate their music and style you learn to like almost every era of Rush. But more on your question, asides from the fact that it's home to their most popular song, I honestly don't really know why it's so critically acclaimed. Maybe it has something to do with their transition to the synth era or perhaps it has something to do with the amount of radio play its songs get because usually Tom Sawyer, YYZ, Limelight, and Red Barchetta are all played often on classic rock radio.

Overall, you can't deny it has some brilliant hits. Personally, I love Power windows though. I think it was their least popular album but I loved the theme of power in the lyrics for all the songs and Geddy did an amazing job with the synthesizers for all the songs.

Okay, cool. I do really enjoy YYZ and Limelight, and The Camera Eye is probably my favorite on the album. Unfortunately, it sort of hampered me from moving forward in Rush's discography (prior to this purchase, I was possession of their lineup from 2112 to Permanent Waves).

Likely one of my issues was that I was going into it with the knowledge that I was already not a big fan of Tom Sawyer or Red Barchetta. There was also the fact that since over half of the tracks were radio hits, I knew over half the tracks during my first listen. Though the remaining three tracks were pretty good, I certainly wouldn't call it their best.

I did pick up Clockwork Angels when it came out, though, and I was pleasantly surprised with their musical direction. In time, I"ll probably give Power Windows a shot, as well as Signals.

Also, thank you very much for your answer! Just being able to talk about it with someone (who's not an online critic) has put my mind to rest for the time being, and I greatly appreciate you putting your time into assisting me with my quandary.

I just don't want to offend anyone's musical taste. Doing so would could result in either a heated reply or overly defensive statement, voiding the purpose of my original question. I want to create a pleasant environment in which any party taking part in the discussion doesn't have to worry about voicing their opinion and receiving some sort of verbal backlash.
