actually... they live off their family wealth and are required to donate a certain amount per year to charity. The Royal Family owns a large portion of land in the UK and all the colonies, and the money they get from rent is HUGE. But they also pay taxes on it and are required to donate something like 80% of the profit to charity or for schools or tax breaks or something.

She is Mother England, emerging from the red telephone box like a phoenix from the flames, turning bread into scones and water into tea. Her corgis are most auspicious symbols of prosperity, providing plentiful fish and chips. The stormy weather of England brews as a dramatic sign that her time is ending after her many, many, many -_ many_ - years of ruling over us. When that time comes, each and every subject will raise their ceremonial teaspoons in the air, as a tribute to the passing of her jolly good soul.
Plus, she fukkin jumped out o' a helicopter wi' James Bond, innit.

Erm Actually the royal estates are in profit and all the money they make goes into government causing everybody in the uk to receive a tax subsidy of about 20p, then you have the fact that they can be used as super ambassadors and that they bring in masses of revenue through tourism and that they're a bastion of pomp, ceremony and culture. The only people who hate the queen are mindless plebs and fedora tippers trying to be edgy.

And from my experience they're not.
See how equally valid our points are?

It costs us ~£33.3 million (Approximately $55.8 million) from 2012 through to 2013 to keep Buckingham Palace and the Royal Family going going, however, the palace brings in ~£500 million (Approximately $839 million) in tourism, from places such as Buckingham Palace, The Tower of London and Windsor castle, for example.
She's fucking worth the cost.

Its hard to separate the Royal Family and the Castles they live in, they are intricately intertwined. People go to see Buckingham Palace because that's where the Queen/King lives equally as much as they visit for its historic significance. There is a certain aura around the idea of a King or Queen that simply intrigues people. Perhaps it is the romanticized idea of medieval royalty or simply the general concept of royalty, but the fact is that without the royal family these castles are nothing more than historical structure. England has plenty of amazing castles but those with Royalty living there for whatever reason are "extra amazing" and thus bring in a majority of the revenue.
Here is a an American Example. People visit the white house b/c its where the president lives. Without the president its just a fascinating historical site nothing more, and would attract a fraction of the visitors it does now.
