That is incorrect. Portal takes place in the same universe as Half-Life. a semi post-apocalyptic world where the alien Combine from another dimension fight over earth.
Portal takes place after the big catastrophy thing. What happened, was they built an intelligent AI to run their facility. That AI, was known as GLaDOS. GLaDOS activated a deadly neurotoxin as soon as she was put online, killing most of the scientists and those inside the building. Any survivors were put into cryogenic stasis. There were hundreds of them. The facility extended four kilometers down into the earth, and... just go play the games.
