Teams work well only if you plan on using synergy in your efforts towards the same goal. It also helps to have a teammate who doesn't have the IQ of a shovel, like I've encountered in the past a few times.

Word of advice: Science will be your best bet.
Diplomatic and Cultural are a pain in the ass to achieve in multiplayer, unless you know really understand what you're doing and your civ is designed for it (i.e. Greece, Siam, etc.). Science can be competitive, but as long as you can keep your capital alive you should have a roughly equal chance.
