you seem well-read/informed. Of course my comment was just a rant - intended to get some discussion going. There is no real way to properly define the "problem" nor offer a viable and complete "solution". When I run for prez in 2038, I might invite you to help out with spending and defense topics. It's important to have knowledgeable and even-keeled folks in office.
I would beg to differ on the idea of space travel and such. The first law of space travel (I forget how it's really called at the moment and google didn't help in 3.5 seconds, but you know the one) where the changes in technology dictate when it would be prudent to send teams out in space has indeed not yet been reached. Basically, the law sates that, given the current and projected trends in technological advances, it is only prudent to send a team out in space such that any team sent after them would not be able to arrive before them due to technological advances. i.e. we send out people/probes to visit the next star system a few light years away, which should take 29.8 years by today's standards, but in 10 years we shorten the trip to just 5 years, then we wasted all that energy now.
Anyway, I gotta finish up my work here and then head out for an evening of music and revelry - an important counterpoint to any engineering mind.
