British colonial strategy:
1. Set up colonies
2. Provide resources, ptotection etc. to encourage it to thrive
3. Once the people there are wealthy, they'll want to buy international goods; encourage such trade
4. Tax the trade to get a return on initial and ongoing resource and military investments.
5. Profit.
Note: In the case of unruly colonies, relieve tax on most goods, focusing tax on only the most profitable trading goods that they can live without.

Yes they were contributing factors to the whole scenario, but not particularly relevant to that exact comment.

American schools teach a very biased version. It is fully accepted that British rule wasnt all glorious and wonderful, but it was beneficial. The military presence was minute but the protection being a British vassal offered was invaluable. Nobody raided those kind of British colonies without balls of steel. Also the overwhelming majority of rules imposed weren't enforced. The only thing the British wanted was strong trade, thriving colonies, and taxes skimmed off the top of the trade. No, that doesn't mean you get British citizenship, nor British parliamentary presence, you get fertile land, wealth of resources, strong trade and happy largely unmolested lives.

Compare it to Spanish or Portuguese colonialism strategy:
1. Set up colony
2. Rape colony for all its resources

The fact is, America would likely never have become any kind of strong unified entity without the British setting up all the foundations.
USA wasnt founded upon resistance to the British dominion, it was founded upon British resources allowed to develop due to British protection and grown by British wealth, and ultimately a wave of insubordination cut those ties when it could stand on its own.

It's not a vacation though. The concept of nationality wasnt the same as it is now. In that era if you emigrated you could lose your official home citizenship, its not that terrible a concept that you can't vote on issues related to a country you live a world away from, its just not the way we do it now.
