1. Nice of you to immediately jump to ad hominem. Did I insult you for your belief ? No. Yet you feel the need to insult me when you have no idea that I'm not actually an atheist, I'm an agnostic.

2. The bible exclusively states that if you wish to count yourself as Christian then you must follow all of it. If you add anything then you are destined for hell. (The bible's words, not mine) Also I wasn't insulting you, I just said I find it funny.

3. If you follow the bible then you are not allowed to decide how to follow the faith, hence the laws. There is a specific set way to live. To be a christian you lose you will to live any other way but the christian way. (This all comes from the bible itself)

Also, you're the one who brought up religion in a contentious way. I was just pointing out how what you said was incorrect.

Catholics believe that you need faith and good works to get into heaven.
Only good works will get you nowhere.
#105 - jagenblitz (05/24/2013) [-]
First off, the Pope was NOT saying that being good gets you into into heaven. He was only saying that being an atheist doesn't make you a bad person.

Secondly, he said that atheists can be redeemed through Jesus, which means they can go to heaven if they accept Jesus as the son of God. In other words, atheists go to heaven when they're no longer atheists. The Pope even released another statement after this one clarifying that.

It's cool and all that you believe that doing good is all you need to get into heaven. But your Pope, your Church and your God disagree with you.

Psalm 14:1

To the choirmaster. Of David. The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds, there is none who does good.

I always found it funny how you lot pick and choose which parts to believe.
User avatar #95 - paintplayer (05/24/2013) [-]
Well, we've found the smug atheist. Catholicism, or even Christianity, does not mean you have to follow the Bible to the letter. It is a reference that we are meant to interpret in our personal way. Fundamentalists are the ones who follow the Bible absolutely. And you people really don't know what you want anyway. You insult us for not following the Bible 100%, saying that we pick and choose how we live our faith so we don't really belong to the faith. But there are two problems with that: first, personal faith and communal religion are related, but not the same. Each person decides their own way to live the faith. Second, if we followed the Bible exactly 100% we would be major douchebags by any standard; no mixed fabrics, kill the gays, etc. So if you want us to be more progressive, let us be more progressive. If you want us to be fundamentalist assholes, then don't complain when we are. But ultimately if you want to get along with Catholics, keep your opinion and your personal faith to yourself. I will never initiate a conversation about faith with a person in a situation where it's not appropriate. If I strike up a conversation with someone new and they start honing in on religion, whether they're religious or atheist, it makes me uncomfortable. So here's a good rule of thumb: don't talk about religion or politics. You'll have more friends that way.

What the hell? What do you mean "just you folks with something or other wrong mentally"? You're talking like mental illnesses are some kind of disease and we're out of our mind. Dude, next time think what you write. I never meant that it's somehow less difficult to ask help if you're not diagnosed/don't have any "mental illness". I wrote what is my experience. Here's the news: just because you can hide behind the monitor, doesn't mean you have to be an asshole.
User avatar #316 - paintplayer (05/25/2013) [-]
Mental illness is a disease, that's why it's called an illness. And as an illness it needs to be treated. People with cancer aggressively treat their issue, why should people with mental disorders do any different? If you're not seeking treatment you're ignoring the problem, and it becomes your own fault.
#318 - vaginismus (05/25/2013) [-]
I know it's a disease, but the way you said it rubs me the wrong way. And as a disease, it really can't be compared to fucking cancer - mental illnesses are possible to win without medicine. As for me, I've already gone to doctor for help, months ago. It seems that you don't have any concrete experience dealing with any kind of severe mental illness, so you really shouldn't be here shouting stupid shit to anyone about anything. Twat.
User avatar #319 - paintplayer (05/26/2013) [-]
The fact that you're offended does not constitute a situation for me. Some diseases are treated with medicine, some require therapy, physical or mental, or other forms of treatment. Just because you're too weak to deal with your problems doesn't mean that everyone who has a mental issue should give up like you have.
#320 - vaginismus (05/26/2013) [-]
What the hell are you talking about? Mental and physical diseases are in no way comparable, so don't even try to make sense of the bullshit you spouted. And exactly how did you come to the conclusion that I've given up? Can you read?
User avatar #324 - paintplayer (05/26/2013) [-]
Keep your italics to your self, drama queen. They're absolutely comparable. Medical conditions needing treatment. This is the same problem we have with homosexuality, people trying to "accommodate their differences" rather than look for a cure. Here's my stand on depression: either seek help or stop beating around the bush and just kill yourself already.
#326 - vaginismus (05/26/2013) [-]
Okay, so you obviously can't read, because I just said a few comments previous that I've seeked help. Also, keep your homophobic statements to yourself, please.

Even though mind illnesses have a lot to do with brain chemistry, it's still not comparable to physical diseases. Medication is only a helping factor, not the treatment. For god's sake, kindly shut up and research this stuff because you obviously know nothing. This discussion is unnecessary and over.

The problem with mental illnesses is that you can't just up and decide that you want to be the president or some such shit. Like you said, you gotta work for it. But for most it's not just that easy to go and get help. It's not like anyone wants to be a miserable loser. Not everyone have the strength themselves or someone pushing them to get help. What I meant exactly is that just because you think you have nothing to live for anymore, doesn't suddenly make you want to go out with a bang and try different things. It's just not that straightforward.
User avatar #208 - paintplayer (05/22/2013) [-]
What is preventing them from seeking help? Even someone with the most severe anxiety could say "mom/teacher/counselor, I'm feeling depressed" then puke and move on.
