Why are you even judging shows by their fanbases? Every show on this planet has it's own moronic fanbase. Even your favorites.

It's simple, really.

Now don't say that this is totally unreasonable of me to do so. I know that I should judge the show for what it is, but that's almost impossible. If I were to watch Clannad now my heart would just be a brick and I would not have enjoyed it nearly as much as I would have if I went into it without knowing anything.
So therefore it's because I dislike the fanbase that I know I'll end up disliking, or in best-case just not liking it as much as I could have. I know it's easy for me to say since I havn't actually seen it.
While I do enjoy anime I also like to be just a little ctitical towards what I watch. So if I were to watch Clannad I would immediately start picking out flaws and disliking it because of the fanbase.
Let's use Death Note and Code Geass as examples. Those shows are hypes and talked about so fucking much that it is nearly impossible to go into it with an open mind. This will make you question its popularity and you will try to tear it down. While the end result may be the same or close to it, you would still not have experienced it the way someone who went into it blindly would have.

I won't be ignorant and deny the fanbases for my favourite anime aren't cancerous as well. Hell, Gurren Lagann is in my top 3. The difference is that I was lucky enough to have experienced the show before I met the fanbase, otherwise they would have been totally unwatchable. It's what happened with JoJo's Bizzare Adventure where everybody talked about it like it was the best shit ever and I just thought it was alright.

I understand that. I can actually relate to it. I have had things that i liked in the past ruined to me by their fanbases. I actually watched Clannad and After Story before i started hearing about it on FJ. I just picked it from a random top 10 list on the internet and watched it start to finish. I don't really want to sound like a fantard and share my opinion about it. So i would say wait a year or two until the fantardish dust settles and then you can maybe try it, watch it and maybe finish it. Develop your own opinion about it without the fanbase annoying you.

Being as popular as it is I don't think that'll be possible, even in a year. It came out in what, 2007? 2008? And it's still regarded as highly as it is.

Think of it more like a meme. People will be crazy about it for a while then settle down. It will still be thrown around, just not as much as it once was.

The same thing happened to Katawa Shoujo a while back. Almost everyone was posting about how sad it was and everything. Today people are still posting about it but much less than they once were.

Look on the bright side at least. If it was 2007 the entirety of the Anime board would be filled up to the brim with Clannad. And like you, i may never have watched it.
