journo (12/03/2015) [-]  not even a little bit true I only ever use shorthand when I'm reporting on a court case because recording devices aren't allowed in a courtroom. I learned it on my own, not in school. You're thinking of an old-school stenographer. They used shorthand to record court proceedings verbatim on behalf of the court. If the cops ask for a journalist's notes, he or she burns that shit because soon the 5-0 will be back with a warrant and ain't nobody gonna be the guy or gal who burned his or her sources. #17 -
ThugAimm (12/03/2015) [-] Thats not true, im currently writing my final paper for my Journalism class and shorthand IS a quicker way to write down what the person your interviewing is saying but it is in no way regulated. Everyone has their own shortcuts, I could always write really qucikly so for me I use + for and, b/c for because, ? for why, and honestly that's about it. And I have no idea who told you that shorthand can be used in court to trump 1st hand evidence, like I said shorthand varies from person to person and I can hardly tell what the fuck my teacher writes sometimes. Theres also a million hoops we have to jump through to get stuff published, my article that I just wrote about veterans going back to college is gonna pass through at least 5 different editors before it gets finally approved. A kid last semester did EXACTLY what you wrote (falsified an interview) and is getting fucking expelled from the college. Your word is a huge deal in this industry (at least at the top levels). Journalism isn't actually that bad these days, TV journalism is but if you look at some of the things that for example VICE are doing its pretty great Journalism. Any of Vice's stuff on the middle-east is pretty outstanding. | ||

FJ got hit hard with a lot of downtime recently. I'm working hard to improve the site, adding new features (mp4s, webms, and GIFs in comments, new comment features, etc) and trying to make the site better for mobile.
