The point is we did, men and women are free to choose any profession they desire with a few exceptions, men can't be lingerie models cos they don't have breasts for example , we are working to remove old laws that give men more rights than women in some areas and vice versa, many other things as well. Women can vote and their vote counts the same. The problem lies in people seeing men and women conforming to their hardwired roles like ~90% of miners/oil rig staff are men, while nursing and primary education is dominated by women as a bad thing, as gender discrimination or some sort of ingrained patriarchal oppression notice how no man complains how hard it is to become a nurse, and no woman begrudges men the sewage or garbage position . I mention the latter as recently the most vocal complaints come from ill-informed self-titled feminists I suspect from your name colour you know'm sayin' . In actual fact, men and women drift towards these kinds of professions because for 1.2m years our brains were wired such that we developed those preferences. There're always extreme examples, anecdotal evidence, but it is always ignored that for the vast majority, the statistically relevant these preferences hold true. And frankly that's okay, so long as the anomalies are free to have a different preference.

The concept of gender roles from an objective POV is that when we had to fight for survival, i.e. 99% of the existence of our genus, male and female Homos no homo developed different biological traits based on their reproductive functions. Females had to carry a baby in their wombs for 9-10 months, making it increasingly difficult to fend for themselves, so the male did so to protect his offspring. This resulted in males developing higher muscle mass and density, while females developed for carrying children, larger fat deposits in the breasts and butt etc.

Naturally because survival is more important than bitching males took on the role of defending the family unit, hunting, building shelter etc. Females in turn took on the less strenuous role of hunting, and subsequently child rearing. It was a symbiotic relationship that worked very well, as evidenced by our survival to the modern age.

As we developed the roles evolved as well, but with the same themes: males worked in mines, fought in wars, led countries, while females raised children, managed the household, became teachers etc.

This was where the idea of masculine and feminine tasks arose, but since we are ignorant in our intelligence, prejudice and bias arose from these thoughts, as from that discrimination.

However in the modern day post-civil rights and suffrage in the west these roles are no longer necessary as we don't fight for our survival anymore.

TL;DR "Gender" as it's known served a purpose in the past, and in some cultures still does, but is larger irrelevant in the west now.

I think people are trying really hard to push the idea of gender roles on people, when today of all days it is the most irrelevant. A man can be feminine and a woman can be masculine in the traditional sense of the words . I like to call that the "personality", that individual thing that marks us as psychologically unique.
User avatar #67 - oneguy (03/18/2015) [-]
I agree. I'm just wondering, if sex and gender are different things, and people can choose to do traditionally masculine or feminine things, regardless of gender, then what purpose does gender serve in that society? Or alternatively, does it serve any purpose at all, and if not, why does it exist?
