I COMPLETELY agree that, in some parts of the US, this does happen, and I think it's reprehensible. I'm pretty patriotic, but I think that if you don't like the US, and you think your reasoning is valid, that's fine. I don't like it when I'm picked out as an American and hated for it, but hatred for the country is a different story. Not that any of that is relevant to the current topic.

Yea, it definitely happens, and it's horrible. But it isn't wide spread.

I do understand that it is strange and off-putting. I think it's just our culture differences that cause that.

I'm a naturalized American and lived in Texas my whole life, probably among the most patriotic states in the country and I don't even feel the slightest bit patriotic. I have respect for people in the military (presumably if they're decent human beings with respect for others as well, but I don't see much point in patriotism. Patriotism clouds a persons better judgement and can easily be manipulated. If your home country is doing something wrong, then don't be afraid to stand up and fight that injustice, because that is mainly what the founding fathers intended. Rather patriotism is the opposite of the mindsets of the founding fathers, who were a bunch of Englishmen who said "fuck England" and decided to colonize some land all the way across the ocean.

What is this 2001? Honestly people just kinda stopped caring a long time ago. Especially since Osama got iced, no one really worries or cares that much anymore.
#298 - cavysback (04/15/2014) [-]
Are you from the US?

Because I have met maybe 1 or 2 people who really care that much.

It seems like you're thinking of a stereotypical American that only exists in backwater USA.
User avatar #403 - Visual (04/15/2014) [-]
In my class that has the pledge, I sometimes stay sitting down because I don't feel like standing. There are two people, a girl and a guy, in my class (white people that are presumably the typical 'MURICAN). The girl tries to guilt others by saying "hey well my brother is in the military so yeah" to which my typical response is "that's good for him" and I just continue with my work sitting down. She still doesn't seem to get the memo that I don't really give too much of a shit about her brother or her feelings of me sitting down. The other guy tries to intimidate me by saying "GET UP" very sternly to me, which is already a bad example of a proper American that DON'T force others to do little rituals they've become accustomed to. Anyways I don't even respond to that shit, I just ignore him.
User avatar #466 - welfarekid (04/16/2014) [-]
I am in delayed entry for the Navy and I stand for the flag every day and am the only one in my class who says the pledge and I do not request any one else to do so, but I know the kids in my class are spoiled and arrogant and have no religious preference they just don't care.
User avatar #317 - ompalomper (04/15/2014) [-]
you are correct. im not american, i simply tend to imagine the world as the most horrible place i can imagine and hope to be pleasantly surprised.

but you have to agree that if a teacher would pull something like in that picture then... i mean, i would feel like shit if i actually just continued to sit and the solider would probably not like it either since he is being used to guilt trip a person into doing something that they don't want to.

but really, i don't know much about this topic. all i knew was that i thought that the comment i made would be fitting and still express my belief that the pledge of allegiance is weird and (in my humble opinion) off-putting

And that is fucking true, Kevin is being a little fucking shit for thinking he is too good.
You don't have to say the pledge but at least stand to respect who died for your ass to not say it.
#310 - bann (04/15/2014) [-]
I've only seen this comic in the form where he says "thank you, now I will exercise that right and stay sitting down"

Plus it's not like they wheel veterans around everyday, plenty of people don't stand for religious reasons.
#276 - cavysback (04/15/2014) [-]
...What does that have to do with anything?

I personally do stand for the pledge, but if someone doesn't feel they should, then all the more power to them for following their personal beliefs.

oh come on. you really can't believe what you just said.

sure, you might have the intelligence to realize that people have the right to do this but you can bet your right nipple that for every one of you there are 2-4 'MURRICANS that will scream "TERRURIST!!!" and have raised their children to do the same

Not in America. Here the waiter/waitress is paid on tips. Their salary is only like $3 (minimum wage is $7.25, which is like $5 less than the average cost of living anyways). the "suggested gratuity" is 18% here, but most people only give 10-15%. If you gave someone a 5% tip here they would probably spit in your food next time you eat there.
