I'm not necessarily a part of any set religion. I believe in certain things about Christianity, but I also believe a lot of things in the bible are untrue.
I also strongly believe a lot of Wiccan beliefs. So technically, none. I dislike organized religion, but am definitely not atheist.

yeah, not like the invisible torturegod of DETH who lives in the sky judging your evry move.
#6303 - anonymous poster (01/17/2013) [-]
both of those words are really wishy washy and makes no sense.
the universe is big though and i dont think the bible does it anny favors by portraying it as holes in the black sky.
even just believing in the universe doesent seem like it makes sense, the best you can do is to read up on astronomy, chemistry and physics and do your best to understand the universe.
#6299 - boomboyrage (01/17/2013) [-]
Actually thats wrong, just because we don't we know something, dosen't make it supernatural, it makes it an unknown, and we should be looking to find out what that thing is so we can understand it, not just throw our hands in the air and say "welp! Its supernatural!" Its that kind of thinking that put us in the dark ages.
#6130 - omnomnipotent (01/16/2013) [-]
Yes and no. Pantheism is a broad term and lots of groups define their own form. For the most part, yes, the universe is god. But not a personal being or deity you worship or something that has omnipotence/omnipresence. Basically, we take the word god and gave it our own meaning.
Does that make sense? lol
#6132 - omnomnipotent (01/16/2013) [-]
Well by powers, I assume you mean supernatural. Well I beleive that our universe is capable of taking any form and any reality, so supernatural is natural.
Like I said before, we took the word god and gave it our own meaning since the "classical" meaning doesn't apply to our beliefs.
#6133 - boomboyrage (01/16/2013) [-]
First of all how did you determine that the universe is capable of doing this?
And second of all, if it is capable, Is it like a piece of putty where it can be molded into shape (shape being form of reality) Or is it like clay, where once it molded itself into a from, it was set in that form, incapable of changing?
#6134 - omnomnipotent (01/16/2013) [-]
Sorry, I may have worded that awkwardly. What I meant was that I believe the universe is infinite in space and time, which could lead to an infinite amount of configurations of matter/energy, thus it could take any form (not that it actually chooses to).
As for your second question, it is capable of changing. When our universe began (again) after the Big Bang, it molded itself with certain properties and characteristics. Where it to occur again, these properties and characteristics of matter and energy can be fundamentally different in the next universe.
#6135 - boomboyrage (01/16/2013) [-]
First, when you say "when our universe began" I can only assume you're speaking of the big bang, and what lies before the big bang is at a sientific unknown, we don't know what reality lays beoynd that starting point, and we can't asess the idea that the laws of the universe wre altered, we may in the future but not at this point in time.
Second, when you say "again" are you talking about the "big crunch thoery", If not, you should check it out, its very interesting.
And last of all, all of this is very interesting stuff, but I sill see no reason to label it "god", if you're not assigning any extra meaning to the universe, then your'e just giving it an unnecassry label, To reiterate my coffee cup anlalogy " This coffee cup is god, It dosen't have any powers, it isn't concious or sentient, no special properties whatsoever..... its just a cup".

To explain why I call the universe god, take into account sentience. As living breathing, doubting organisms we perceive our surroundings and our own existence. But what are we? We are just a system of atoms and energy growing and becoming more aware of itself. We evolved from single cell organisms which themselves evolved from inorganic materials interacting with each other in earth's early atmosphere and oceans. This is abiogenesis at work, which leads me to believe that all forms of matter and energy have some level of sentience; the more complex the organism/system, the high the level of sentience.
I believe that our sentience, our consciousness, is "indestructible". We never truly cease to be.
This is where the Big Crunch/Bang comes in. When all things fall into a singularity, we all exist as one single consciousness, one sentient "being" if you will. Then the Bang happens, splitting itself into an indeterminate amount of particles of consciousness. The cycle continues. That's what my god is the ever-present sentience of the universe.
That was a mouthful.
my fingers are killing me
#6136 - omnomnipotent (01/16/2013) [-]
Yes, I was talking about the Big Bang. Basically I believe in a cyclical model of the universe "in which the universe follows infinite, self-sustaining cycles" (quoting Wikipedia now). I like to acknowledge M-Theory (String Theory) in this when thinking of a cyclical universe. The idea that laws can be totally different in other universes is a bit whack right now, but it is just one of those thing I take on faith, yet it is not totally disregarded by the scientific community.
And yes, The Big Crunch plays a role, as it may pertain to the cycles of the universe as they are played out in String Theory.
Oh, and I should have said earlier that I basically believe in Multiverse Theory, though this just complicates things. =P
And to hopefully answer the last thing, get ready, this is where I get weird....

I do understand now why you personally, call this universe a god I think, that at this point we're at a stand still... I'm not trying to cop out or anything, but Saying that "we are sentient, we are made up of atoms, therefore, atoms are sentient", is kinda like saying, "cheese is delicious, cheese is made up of atoms, therefore everything in the universe made up of atoms is delicious", and how would we even go about determining that a non living object is sentient. Every example of sentience we have comes from a living organism, every single example of a mind comes from some form of brain, call me a sceptic, but without some solid evidence I'm afraid I reject the claim of sentience.
Speaking of the multiverse theory, I went to physics lecture on that a while back :)
I do think its an interesting hypothesis, but I don't really see any merit too it in a sense, because weather or not its true doesn't really matter whatsoever, to quote Matt Dillahunty " I don't care if you can prove to me I'm in the matrix, until you can show me the way out!"
To reiterate and sum things up, whether or not something is "possible" (and here I go again with all the scepticism) I don't really care, unless you can demonstrate it.
But I do find your position preferable to that of most theists, as I would imagine that you belief in pantheism has far less effect on society, and is pointing more towards a secular society, but that's probably just me :)
#6194 - omnomnipotent (01/16/2013) [-]
lol Well like I said before, I take some of this stuff on faith, on just the slim hope that existence is a bit more exciting than it appears. That's why I call it my religion and not my science.
I do realize what I say is a bit rough around the edges, but I'm young and impressionable; I have plenty of time to refine my beliefs into something a bit easier to explain. =]
