Because Jesus loves me more than anyone else ever could. I love my friends and family and I even try to love my enemies as we're supposed to do. But when your God tells you to do something, you do it, regardless of everything else.
Just for clarity, though, when Jesus commanded us to forsake our wives, children, fields, etc, to follow Him, He didn't mean literally. He meant to place all those things second in order to put your faith first. So when you hear atheists bitching about child neglect and all that, be sure to understand the context of the Scripture.

Why would Jesus be able to love you more than anyone else?
I'm not referring to what he already said, but what if he literally told you to kill the closest person to you, someone who loves you more than anything else, without any reason.
What, specifically, would drive you to follow through with this?
#12840 - omnomnipotent (02/24/2013) [-]
Does that mean your relationship with everyone you know means nothing to you if you were told to turn your back on them? People who have endured hardship and strife to make you happy, to keep you alive and well?
Do you think that just because no one has gone through what Jesus has means that they wouldn't suffer just as much - or even more - for you?
#12845 - jokeface (02/24/2013) [-]
No, of course not. My relationships are of significant value to me. My love for Christ doesn't diminish them, it's just more important than them. But that's like saying paying my rent is more important than paying my phone bill. I need both. But my rent is obviously more pertinent.
#12852 - jokeface (02/24/2013) [-]
You underestimate my dependency on my phone. But okay, I'll use a different analogy. Jesus is like my right hand, and my loved ones are like my left hand. I'm right-handed, so I rely more heavily upon my right hand. But that's not to say I don't need my left hand. Things would be much more difficult without it, but if for some reason I had to give up one, I'd give up my left hand before my right one.

Well why would there be? I mean all we as humans are is just atoms and electricity (incredibly simplified version, but you understand my meaning). We are so pathetically simple, yet breathtakingly beautiful and complex it's unimaginable. I mean just to think that you 10 years ago was made of completely different atoms than you are now, is just amazing!
But, we reach the point of our limitations, when we die we essentially just...well...die. I mean, it's morbid sure, everyone wants to continue living (I am 100% confident this is one of the strings that helps religion stay so strong, a need to not face finality), but our bodies just can't do that. There is nothing supernatural about our bodies, but the pure fact of what they can achieve is so great I'm not surprised it was viewed at one time to require supernatural explanations. Unfortunately, science just caught up with us and we are no longer "special" in the sense of explanations.
Sorry kind of went on a spiel there.

Sorry for the late reply.
It's fine, spiel to your hearts content! lol
I'm not saying there is something supernatural at all about us, as much as I hope there was. But we don't even understand the full extent of our minds, let alone the universe. What if there is something about us that keeps our consciousness going? A type of energy, I guess, that is still in motion once we shed our mortal coil? I don't think this to be too far-fetched, considering other forms of matter/energy in our universe that elude us because they do not behave like normal particles/waves: dark matter, for example.
