Somehow a lot of people seem to have forgotten all of a sudden how bad Obamacare was. They also seem to have forgotten how shitty the FCC is at it's job before this got passed

To quote FCC Commisioner Pai:

"You like your ISP? You can keep your ISP!"

and:

“The Old World offers a cautionary tale here. Compare the broadband market in the United States to that in Europe, where broadband is generally regulated as a public utility. Today, 82 percent of Americans have access to 25 Mbps broadband speeds. In Europe, that figure is only 54 percent. Moreover, in the United States, average mobile broadband speeds are 30% faster than they are in Western Europe.”

sure, but it's my fucking choice on whether or not I want it.

Now the government gets to shit all over my decisions,

same fucking shit we got with Obamacare. Why anyone trusts the government to regulate this shit I'll never understand.
#20 - anonexplains (02/27/2015) [-]
You can still choose whether you want it or not?

The FCC isn't going to force you to buy an internet contract, but if you do want to buy one then the price should now be more 'fair' since the absolute monopolies that have existed thus far have had some of their power removed.

This is kinda the exact thing governments should be doing. Morons like you who clearly don't understand the basic premises of how a society functions and who shout about 'DUH GUBMINT RESTRUCTING MUH FREEDOMS!' are the ones that give Americans such a bad name.
User avatar #21 - icameforthepron (02/27/2015) [-]
but they now get to dictate what is "fair" which when it comes to the Government we all know is fucking bad.

I'm not saying net neutrality isn't good. What I'm saying is that the shit the FCC passed isn't real fucking net neutrality. It's government sticking their fucking hands into the pie and yelling "ITS MINE."

Mark my words, you're going to see new taxes, maybe not directly but at the very least you ISP will be taxed more which will cause your prices to skyrocket. Innovation that was at least being somewhat done is going to stop now as well because of regulations that will get put in place.
#38 - anonexplains (02/27/2015) [-]
and don't forget all those extra costs involved in tracking/reporting the "fairness"
#22 - anonexplains (02/27/2015) [-]
I don't think you fully appreciate how inflated prices become due to no competition (the current situation) They could tax it 200% and yet if the prices were diminished to a non-monopolised rates then it would still most likely be a reduction in price.

As to 'fair.' Well we entrust the government to carry out 'fair' treatment in every court of justice and for the majority of the time that works out swimmingly. You're attacking a vague possibility that as yet has no basis in reality.

Innovation when it comes to this sort of thing simply isn't done in the US. Even if it were then you still have the fact that the deconstruction of a monopolised industry sparks more push to innovate than restrictions put on it.
User avatar #23 - icameforthepron (02/27/2015) [-]
And I don't think you full appreciate how these new regulations from treating a ISP as a utility create a fucking barrier to startup ISP companies.
User avatar #52 - okamiterasu (02/27/2015) [-]
And how exactly would the barrier be higher than the hundreds of millions of dollars they would've needed to lay their own lines before. Not to mention the multitude of cable company backed local legislature specifically designed to make it as hard as possible for startups to enter various cities. You seem to underestimate just how bad things are currently. teh gubment would have to actively try in order to make things any worse.
