1A) Outdated? Yeah, probably. But then again, was sprinkling birdblood on someone to cure lepracy at anytime true? Did it help? If not, then those things were pretty clearly wrong all the time and "outdated" doesn't quite does it. If it did help, did reality change?
I know, I thought so too, for as long as I considered myself Christian. But what does it change what I want God to do? Isn't the Bible meant to teach us about God no matter what we want?

{Red Sea} I don't get it. The whole bible is about showing how great and wonderful Jahweh/Jesus is, to make us believe in him. Also how does it affect my free-will if we could all agree on them existing, and leave it to us whether we want to worship or follow them? Knowing how reality is doesn't take my free will? Also isn't the hell/heaven part making it more of a blackmailing than a free choice, once you know about it?

{Virgin Birth} Is it possible though? I don't know. It seems conceivable, but then again, I don't really care. Whether Jesus was born from a virgin doesn't change whether what he says is true or moral.

{7 Day Creation} For the first time in our discussion I feel poorly answered. The Bible specifically showed the definition for the first day as day-night cycle. I also showed how the genesis account and the actual happenings on earth don't match up in chronological order. I wanted to know why you think differently here. But you just answer me with "research yourself"? Please don't do this to me.

{Noah} Oh, I am sorry, I should have specified my problems with the Noah story. Because whether a flood happened or not, is not to my interest. Quite frankly, I expect that there were quite a number of floods in human history and an equal huge amount of stories about them. But the story is pointless if there wasn't a global flood, that wiped off the whole life of the earth. And we are all descending from Noah and his family. Which I can not accept, because every DNA evidence I ever came across contradicts with this.
If this story, however, is only meant as moral teaching or something, what is it about? That god can kill us all if he wants to? Or that he can feel things like anger, regret or love? Help me out here

1B) No worries^^.
- I imagined this too, but described it as "grey space"^^.
But then again "outside of space" doesn't make sense. Like "North from the Northpole." You can say it, but it doesn't work.
And: If existence is dependant on time, how can something exist without time? Even if this would be possible, we don't know whether this is the case for anything. And if we could establish that, we don't know whether it would fit something as a god. And then, whether this fits one of our human gods or not.
I also already mentioned that "all-powerful" doesn't make any sense to me.

- I honestly have less trouble with the deterministic philosophy than with a soul. Because everything we observe follow the rules of physic. If we know the situation, we can predict the next. The more we know, the better this works. Same with people. The better you know a person, the better you can predict them. If you do not act according to your personality or your experiences, to what then? If you behave differently because of drugs, the drugs in combination with your personality could've predicted your behaviour. You see where I am going with this?
But a soul? What is that? Do we need this? Do all living beings have it? Did it evolve with us? Does it change when we have brain injuries?

- Wait, nonexistence is existence? This just doesn't make sense... „Nothing“ is not a thing, it is not being anything, it doesn't exist. It's just a concept for the absence of anything, but... what would that be? Empty space isn't nothing either, as „empty space“ already is something... Argh. What do you mean?

- I thought a lot about this point during the server downtime, so I rewrote this part. This is our main difference, I think. You always describe religion and science as tools, that you would like to combine, for a better world view and understanding. And I this sounds appealing to me, but I do not understand it.
You see, science has turned out to be our best tool for learning about and understanding the universe. But what is religion a tool for? Religion as a set of rules, stories, rituals and ideas. What do you need or use it for? For inspiration? Why not just use literature? For supernatural appeal? Why not use fantasy games? For controlling the people? I can not support that. For comfort and guidance? Why is it not better finding out what the world really is and act according to that?
You see, all religious people... seem to have already taken their bet. They are not inquiring, they are not searching for truth, they found it. They do not care about that in other religions the missing evidence doesn't equal the evidence for absence.
I will not make this bet.
I can't.
If I do not know anything of it to be true, how can I follow all of it? I will go on and listen to all people, of all religions, of all ethnicies, of all regions, of all cultures. But why do I need religion. What do I need it for. Please, tell me

2A) It's great we can both forgive our ancestors for ******* up^^.

- Yeah, but... wouldn't all religions call the other religions cults? They all have some kind of human leader in a form, and deem their interpretations as missguided, and their followers as worshipping a human over a god... Be it the Pope, Luther, Jesus, Ghandi, Buddha, Mohammed, the Watchtower Society,...
I'd like to have coherent definitions, I can use everywhere, so I can actually talk about the same thing with people^^. And the one I found on wiki makes most sense to me, so far...

- If it were just rules of a tribe, how can it be the revealed truth of god? If it was just mixed into it, how do you know which of it was just their understanding and moral stories and was what true revelation?

- I was hinting towards islam this time (psyched ). The descriptions of mohammed tend to be those of a schizophrenic, and he basically did a retelling of bible stories, he had most likely known, under, what he perceived to be the guidance of an archangel. It is not impossible, that he sounded convincing and was charismatic enough to gain followers, who would later put words in his mouth. What do you deem more probable though? Him being schizophrenic or have been given the true and final word of god?

2B) It's k, they look pretty nice on my hat rack
Ideas are defined by their outcome. I am not emotionally attached to them. If I followed an idea for my whole life and I later find it to be destructive in nature, I do have to be able to leave it behind at an instant. Thus I must treat ideas depending on their usage, not my emotional attachment.
I still treat idea-holders respectfully, as I said. But ideas? Why?
Also, if we make some ideas not to be questioned, aren't we opening the door to ignorance?

3) Yeah, I just thought, it would console him, as this was why I had thought he stuck with his religion. As his guidance and solace. My point – anyways – was, that I don't see the connection anymore, that people just need religion to cope with stuff. Not that I would find myself the best example for anything, but I don't think it's necessary to flee to hopes of an afterlife, when valueing the here and now might just be as much consolation.
I do have lost some people in my life already, but wishing to see them again seemed egoistic and wishful thinking to me. It doesn't tell me anything about the possibility of an afterlife, so talking about it always seemed dishonest.

Well, our dear Leader took care of that, as I was holding on to my response for over a week now^^. But hey, take your time, even without server downtime.

My pleasure, mr englman

Answer to:
www.funnyjunk.com/user/englman/340#340
Oh dear, we just arrived here and already busted the 8k mark. Where we gonna go next :arrogant

1) But... isn't the bible supposed to express superior morality? And couldn't a(n all powerful?) god protect his people, when they make a good example of how to treat people properly? I mean, one the one side he gets people to be nice and on the other, to notice him again and realize he is pretty cool. But instead there are just those... weird rules that sound just like every other nation's rules back then...
{Red Sea} Well, that was interesting. I only got confused at the last part. Why wouldn't god want people to believe in him? Isn't that kinda... the point?
{Virgin Birth} With „very rarely“ do you mean „in some species“ or „sometimes in usually sexually reproducing animals“?
{7 Day Creation} Gen 1:5 „ God called the light <day>, and the darkness he called <night>. And there was evening, and there was morning – the first day.“ I dunno, to me this always seemed like the definition. Do you think differently here?
The bible says first day and night (1), then came plants (3), then the sun(4), then birds/water creatures (5), then land creatures (6).
But we know that first there had to be the sun(4), then we can have day and night(1), then life in the water(5), then plants(3), land creatures(6) and birds last(5). I have no idea how you can call this same order? (I mean, you were only talking about animals, I know, but those don't seem right either)

(I am intrigued though; I agreed with 2 out of 3 points. Could you do me a favour and probably tell me your reasoning on the Arche story too?)

1B) Oh, so it is about abiogenesis. I was confused for a second, because you wrote „spontaneous“. Read about that membrane too. Quite cool, I admit. I guess though, that the RNA got caught in first, though, and DNA came later, but that's only what I slightly remember and guessed.
- Hah, okay, we probably have different understandings of the word „perfect“ then . But having evolution is pretty cool, as eh doesn't afraid of anything. Even if it killed about 99% of all life forms on earth, as a supposedly outcome/survivor of it, I can't complain :3.
- Yeah, I can see that reasoning. However, I dunno if a being that could „start“ anything as a big bang (if that is possible to start something before there was time o_o) would also be able to intervene, you know? Also, someone once said, that whenever god intervenes, his hand should be dropping of physics, because of the things he changed. Which is a weird, but good point. Unless he uses his powers to veil his existence... but then again... why would he do this D
- I knew the multiverse theory but have never seen it used for arguing FOR or AGAINST a god, lol. I mean, I gave up the idea of „all powerful“ and „all knowing“ years ago, because they just don't work. But a being could at least in one universe be maximally powerful or some stuff... but then again, such a being would have to be outside of the universe... and this is weird, because IN a universe means in time and space, which would mean god is out of time and space. Which could be translated to he exists nowhere and never. But „existing“ is dependant on those two factors. Both must be true for it to be considered „existing“ by us. And no, I have no idea where I am going with this, you just asked for my thoughts and there is this little mess :3.
- Yeah. I just wanna know why others seem to be so keen on telling me there is this second option, for which I see no evidence. It confuses me. And intrigues me, as I wanna know why they are so convinced that there is something/one directing all of this.

2A) That's easy to say. I always try to understand people's thinking and not condemn them as „just evil“ or „just good“. I guess they thought of Israel as the promised land and the people there as unworthy, because of their wrong ideas. You gotta protect your holy land, you know :-/. I find that more emotional than ignorant... Today we know to take less aggressive interpretations and more accepting view points... but back then? How should they have known? I mean, if we don't know what is the right interpretation, how can we deem theirs wrong?
- „Cult (religious practice), the original usage, referring to the totality of external religious practice and observance, the neglect of which is the definition of impiety.“
OR „a new religious movement. This is a cult in a common modern sense“
I took that straight from our deer wikipedia. This is what I expected you to write. Your definitions are new to me. Are there more official definitions? Apart from that we probably might agree that Scientology isn't exactly harmless for its members but is a religion. EDIT: Just checked that. It isn't considered a religion in all countries, a cult in Isreal/Chile for example. Which leads back to my understanding of religion so far.
- Which leads back to my first point in my response. This doesn't seem like godly/superior guidelines, but just like some rules written down, that they had back then.
- It is a bit dissappointing, but also heartwarming, that we are seemingly both stuck at this point about schizophrenia. I don't know if their voices or ideas being similar helps that much. I mean, how can I exclude that someone just collected the ideas of similar sounding schizophrenics? You could probably create a pretty coherent description of a Flip-Flop eating deity that asks its followers to do likewise..
Sorry, I am really not trying to imply that's how the bible was written, but what if someone heard of bible stories his whole life, was schizophrenic, and therefore retold his own version of it, would it be so unlikely that at least some people believed him and added it to a chorus?
I am not saying, that's how it happened, but I just can't exclude it. And this bothers me a lot.

2B) I really hate those guys for ruining wearing my trilbys Now they are called fedoras and I am getting judged. Daaaamn you, fedora guys!
I don't know about treating ideas respectfully. I honestly don't. Ideas is what I fight for or against, all day long. I torture them by throwing them into fighting the strongest opposing attacks I can find and throw them away if they don't hold what they promised.
It really seems to escape some people that treating ideas like **** doesn't mean you should treat people the same way. They are the ones helping you, for peanut-pie's sake! Also you two are doing the same thing, helping each other and.... Sorry, ranting again^^. Also I just realized we agree anyways, lol. Preaching to the quire again...

3) This is weird, that you say it though. I didn't grieve. I mean, why yes, I cried like a freaking soap dispenser, when I sat in church. But only because I could feel the pain of all the people around me. Friends and family members, who lost a part of their life. Seeing my grandfather that broken, bascially gave me the coup de grace. He lost all his foundation for life, and, in this very moment, he was mentally crippled and more alone that I could ever feel my whole life. It came in waves and broke my defenses, and splashed down my cheeks. I (intellectually) didn't care that much, honestly. I was happy for the time I had had with her and inspired by the way she lived her life, especially since so many people cared so much about her. I felt happy and proud for her, and hoped to someday people would miss me just as much. It is weird, you know, that as the non-believer, I probably had the most easy time coping with her death, while also probably crying the most at the funeral.

I am glad too, but the length is killing me...
I misstakenly double clicked onto your text while writing this, and it all got deleted... After doing this twiiiiiice and raging a tiny bit , I made a word.doc.
Wuhuuu, less than 8k!!!
