Damn, you left it 2 years too late. I could have chose Hitler as my artist to study if I knew he painted. (I still don't quite understand why they would give us essays to write about art, instead of producing art work. I failed the writing part of my exam, but got full marks for my drawn piece, so writing about people that do art doesn't really make anyone a better artist.)

They are fake "dummy" cartridges.
Just casings with spent primers, no gun powder.
They are used to function test guns without the risk of accidentally blowing holes in shit.
They are also used in films and such when they need it to look like a gun is loaded when it isn't.
Normally the spent primers aren't a problem, because you can't see them.
But for this shot they should have clearly gotten some that looked fresh, and not used.

Though, looking again at the gif below, they look to have been fired. Movie mistakes, everyone!

I think the grooves inside the shell look symmetric enough that they haven't been fired, but it's possible I suppose. They already used that shotgun for a sequence earlier in the movie.
