where i live its so hard to become a firefighter the only chance you have is to basically become a paramedic. Then when you get hired your looking at like 75,000-95,000 a year depending where and experience. Im currently an emt with slim to no chance in getting into the departments i applied for.

Volunteers make next to nothing (some do get paid). Pro's dont get paid a ton but they also have to want for nothing. Alot of their job consists of doing nothing for 12 horus at a time. They usually work 36 hours a week and get to dick around at work. Granted the times they do work are hard work but those are few an far between. When I was at university I guy I had class with was a professional very fighter and had to tell every professor so he could have his phone on his desk, on ring at all times. A few of them tried to do the whole "thank you for what you do thing" and he would always cut them off and say "stop, I do nothing all day, and I get paid for it, most of us are asshole bro's who wouldn't risk a hair on our heads to save someone in a burning building." Such is life.
