I've heard about Dark Souls, but never played it, care to enlighten me so I can spend good money on it?
#283 - anonymous (08/17/2012) [-]
I can't really think of any proper comparisons. You won't like it if you aren't good at games. You won't like it if you want light, arcade-y combat.
You will like it if you thought Skyrim would have been awesome if only Bethesda had actually bothered with a proper combat system.

It has great environmental story telling. The plot itself is quite bare, but the aesthetic and tone of each level still involves you in the game world.

It has strategic action combat, I've heard some call it slow. Rather than charging in swinging your sword like any other RPG, you actually have to pay attention to what you are doing. Button mashing will kill you quickly, but each weapon has unique combat styles.
For example, when using a rapier and a shield, you will often find yourself strafing around just outside your enemy's attack range until you find a comfortable opening and choose to attack.
With a halberd and light armor though, you will more likely find yourself rushing in to kill the enemy as quickly as possible, then rolling away to dodge any counter attack.

The levels aren't repetitive. There are a good variety of enemies with different enough tactics that you will need to learn the new enemies motions to beat the area easily. The levels themselves have a variety in design, one level is full of traps, a few are extremely vertical, some use lighting to increase the difficulty.

Really I don't know what to say that could properly describe playing the game. As much as I heard about how good Demon's Souls was, I didn't realize why until I played the game, quit because it was too hard, then played it again a few months later and realized how great it was.

It and Demon's Souls are only $20 these days, they are worth a look at least.
If you do choose to play, remember leveling priority.
Loosely, souls go towards upgrading your weapon first, leveling your Vitality/Endurance second, upgrading armor third, and only after that do you start increasing other stats. Ignore this and die.

Thanks anon :D

Sounds like a great game :D

It is quite fantastic, but as it's namesake tells you, it's incredibly hard. Prepare to die A LOT.

Also, what Anon said is absolutely spot on. If you're a fan of atmosphere and fantastic and creative art styles, this game will floor you.

However, what he didn't mention is that it's very Metroid-y. A lot of backtracking is ensued, but not in a bad way. It's like exploring a new world once you figure out/can open the level up even more.

Just be prepared to die a lot, and for a lot of seemingly bullshit things. Think of old school Mario, where remembering is half the battle.

who said anything about that P.O.S Rift? WoW has to compete with guildwars 2 now, which is about 20 times as fun from what I've played in the beta weekends. Since GW2 has no sub fee I can afford to play both, but only if WoW steps up it's game. I also like the aesthetic in WoW, but I find my own character incredibly ugly nowadays.
#238 - Odobisean (08/07/2012) [-]
Man why do you have to hate on Rift? That's like the only MMO I like these days, I don't even give a shit about how they look shiny you get used to it after playing 50 different Asian MMOs. So what if the actual rift system is kind of shit their raids and dungeons are actually hard and can't be cleared the first day of release.
User avatar #279 - obliquezombie (08/07/2012) [-]
Sorry man, I just absolutely despise it. I played it for a few weeks, got one max level character, and just couldn't do it anymore. It just simply didn't click with me.

I'm big on how a game makes me feel, how the atmosphere feels, and Rift's was lacking completely. I did, however, like the aptly named rift system, but even that got on my nerves when I was simply trying to quest and no one was dealing with the rifts, so then it turned into an invasion.

And to me, it's not about challenge. Well, not entirely. So many people complain about how easy WoW's dungeons and, subsequently, the raid finder raids are, but to me, it's about absorbing the story and having fun with these uniquely crafted areas. And of course, after months of gearing up and memorizing the dungeons, they're bound to be easy.

Besides, when Mists of Pandaria comes out, dungeons and raid will be new and difficult solely because of that fact, the new continent won't have flying mounts until 90 (bringing back world PvP), and their new talent tree should--and only should--get rid of the cookie-cutter trees, allowing for many new variations all equally useful given the situations.

I'm not touching WoW again until they update the character models like they've promised to do three times already and failed to deliver. A single pandaren buttcheek has more polygons than the entire body of one of the races from the original selection. A human and a panda standing next to one another look like they're from different fucking games!
User avatar #280 - favourite (08/07/2012) [-]
Updated character models are guaranteed in MoP. Updated Dwarves are will be there at release, with the others following in patches.

So yeah.
User avatar #161 - obliquezombie (08/07/2012) [-]
Who cares about fidelity, the characters have more personality than that pile of shit Rift. It's about the art style, not how shiny they look in the sun.

Still, I never knew they promised to update them. But take solace in the fact that this is the last expansion they'll ever have, so there's not much they can do but update the base game now, in order to keep people playing.

But srsly d00d, graphics don't make a game. I started playing last summer, and this is WITH games like Skyrim and Deus Ex out. I still think it's eye candy for the unique visual presentation.

Soo stoked for the Warlock changes though. We will be OP, then nerfed to the ground, then we'll get slowly built up again.

No, everything was done long before GW2.

User avatar #131 - obliquezombie (08/07/2012) [-]
I didn't mean that GW2 was adding so many new things, but TESO essentially copied the PvP system.

And they won't, as far as I'm concerned, have the down-leveled areas allowing friends of all levels to play with each other accordingly--meaning no power leveling.
