...And not to be a nitpicker, but the responsibility of preventing an injury in a dogfight really relies on the person who has an animal that can harm another. I don't blame my bitchy cat for hissing at my dog when he passes by (she is definitely "untrainable," and she was attacked badly by a dog before she came into my life); I blame my dog for reacting to my cat hissing at him by snapping at her. She cannot badly hurt him, and he can easily learn to avoid disturbing her.

Should the Chihuahua be allowed to growl at the big German shepherd dog? No, but Chihuahuas are goddamned dumb little motherfuckers (I love my chi-chi dearly, but fuck, she is a fluffy little numbskull compared to a brilliant, very easily trained GSD). Better to show the GSD how to avoid the cranky Chihuahua and tolerate her cranky but harmless shenanigans, since he is the one who would win the fight.

He didn't necessarily say she didn't try. Either way, I'm just saying that both people involved made bad decisions and were uninformed about how the situation could have been improved, which is unfortunate.

Personally, I'm glad he stuck with the dog, since this scenario he described is exactly how animals end up in shelters.

But in the future, should such a conflict arise, there are better solutions. If he had been more experienced with how to train and socialize both of their dogs, would she have listened to his advice and cooperated? We don't really know.

that sucks. ive lived in a few different places some nicer then others but ive never heard of a place that bad. south collinwood Ohio has 1698 per 100k violent crimes. even there many people defend them self's with firearms. my self included. I cant imagine how impoverished a place must be for firearms to be prohibitively expensive as cheap as they are.

When you have to choose between feeding your family and buying a gun this week, you generally tend to choose food over firearms if you have any sense of ethics. And if you have no sense of ethics, you go buy a gun and use it to shoot people with! It's a great system here.

Needless to say, I'm supportive of much tighter gun regulations, particularly in low-income areas with high rates of violent crimes. I know how to handle a gun myself, but I would never have one in my house due to the security risk they impose, even in a secured gun safe. I own large, loud pit bulls, and that's enough of a crime deterrent for me. And they're cuddlier than guns, too!

where are you from. here in the usa the vast majority of firearms are in the hads of law abiding citizens.
User avatar #76 - nylak (06/14/2014) [-]
St. Louis, Missouri. With a crime rate of 87 per 1000 citizens, it's hard not to be a criminal, and most "law abiding" citizens cannot afford a firearm, much less learn how to use one confidently and effectively against an armed assailant in the case of a break-in. This basically means that if someone here were to attempt to use a gun in defense, they are significantly more likely to be shot and killed by their assailant than if they did not have a gun in the first place.

The only people I know who own guns in my area are low-level drug dealers, militia members, and policemen (since I don't associate often with actual "criminals"); no one here owns one for self defense, since that's just opening yourself up to break-ins. People wanna steal yo guns, and they'll happily shoot you to get em.

what the percentage of invaders getting shot by a homeowner with a gun compared to homeowners without?
User avatar #187 - malhaloc (06/14/2014) [-]
Well I'm not very good with statistics but I'm pretty sure both numbers are really really low. Invaders once seeing a gun pointed at their face will most likely not want to be in the general vicinity of the wielder. Invaders who break into the houses of people without guns, I feel comfortable saying, usually have a 100% chance of not being shot.

One source among many that describes the details of the studies I compacted into a statistic; I invite you to read the text throughout, but I can provide a summation if necessary due to time constraints.
