a stinger is generally connectedto any form of a venom dispensation.
porcupine quills are barbed hairs that detach, similar to cactus needles.
hedgehogs are just prickly to make them hard to eat, while porcupine quills detach.
stingers sting, porcupines prick.

When a hedgehog feels attacked, it sticks it's spikes out and pricks you very painfully. They make weird noises while doing so. But when they're not defensive and see no threat, their spikes are easy to touch and don't prick you.
I worked in a petstore with a stressed hedgehog. My fingers burned from all the pricks.
