That's horrible!

Is it keeping the shark from lashing out, as well? You'd think it would if it were being hurt.

No, as other people have said the shark is in a bit of a trance, usually they have to be held upside down for that to work but some sharks that's not necessary.
The metal gauntlets are a safety thing, not just if you get bitten but you can ward the sharks off by planting the glove against their noses. With hammerheads you can see their reaction, its almost like they get burnt and jerk their heads away.

ever seen a salamander with 8 legs?
why do people do this to their pets?
#9 - noxface (03/09/2015) [-]
No, but I have seen a 14 legged starfish before (it started out with 5 legs)

Salamanders are ridiculous though. If you take an axolotl and inject it with iodine it "evolves" and transforms into a salamander!

Imagine a giant starfish shaped like a snowflake

i thought that seastars reproduced asexually using fragmentation where they detached a limb and a new starfish would form from it.

That can happen, the largest starfish in the world - the sunflower starfish or simply the sun star - sometimes drops a leg for no apparent reason, and that leg will regrow into a new starfish. But even the sun star reproduces through spawning eggs during the breeding season which are then fertilised by the opposite gender.

Interestingly, the most common starfish in the UK eats mussels and they will eat farmed mussels as well. I heard a story about a mussel fisherman who decided to kill all the starfish he found on hit nets by cutting them in half. Obviously those halves will just regrow and he will have doubled the number of starfish eating his stock!

i had an artist friend who somehow made each of her starfish's legs sprout in in two. it looked pretty satanic but it didn't seem to have any problems
#7 - noxface (03/09/2015) [-]
Yeah they're pretty fucking awesome creatures. They can even just drop one of their legs and move on if they're getting attacked. Its like "You wanna eat me? Take a fucking leg and leave me alone"
