Like I said, even maps of the core are very rare. People generally just avoid it altogether because there's a very high chance of death from colliding with the mass shadow of a star while you're in hyperspace. Undoubtedly their computers could find a match, but they'd have to have a map of the core first, which they probably didn't.

If core maps are so rare, then the map should have just been a very narrow slice of whatever they explored to get Luke to the system. Instead they somehow had a nearly completed map of the whole core! I don't know, I just super doubt that explanation.

I thought the whole DeathPlanet and wannabe Emperor & Vader combo was the worst part of the Movie. Granted the DeathPlanet was pretty cool even though It was essentialy the same setup as the DeathStar in Episode 4, But they could have made new villains (Changing the new vader to a Young guy was pretty natural since the main characters where noobs so naturaly they needed to face a noob Sith otherwise they would have instantly lost but still It could have been handled alot better.)
#29 - sedativechunk (01/01/2016) [-]
Also, why didn't Leia just ask for his help via the force like he did to her? Is the planet "filtered" from the force somehow? Bullshit, it was barren compared to the swamp full of organic life Yoda lived on intentionally so he wouldn't be discovered.

The more I think about it, the more things I find I didn't like in TFA. I don't know, I definitely feel like I wanted more out of the movie than what we got in more than one aspect.

True, but Luke, like Yoda, didn't want to be found. I'm sure there's some way to shield your presence from other Force users. Otherwise Vader would certainly have felt Obi-Wan on Tatooine while he was orbiting it. But hell, he could barely sense him when he was 30 feet from him in the Death Star. I don't think the Force works like a compass.

Also why did R2 only have 9/10 of the map? And if Luke wanted to be left alone why did he even make a map in the first place?
#23 - thepizzadevourer (01/01/2016) [-]
In my opinion, that wasn't a map of the galaxy, but instead of the Galactic Core. This makes sense because there's so many stars in the core there are only a few navigable hyperspace routes. Thus very little of the core has been mapped, making star charts of it very rare, valuable, and hard to find. This would also explain why it was so difficult to find Luke. Finally, it also makes sense for the location of the first Jedi Temple, seeing as in olden times Jedi were much more reclusive than later on.

I can buy that perhaps R2's map was just a piece of the galactic core, and thus BB-88's piece was actually just dozens of systems, instead of billions. Even so, the Resistance's computers can't match the geometry of those dozens of systems?

Hyperdrives supposedly work by travelling outside of space (in a different dimension I think), so there shouldn't ever be any obstacles, it just wouldn't make sense anymore. One thing that is odd, however, is that planets stop hyperdrive, logically stars and black holes are WAY bigger than tiny planets, so a hyperdrive should stop near them as well. The only issue I see with having a black hole is if you're close enough to a black hole to pull you out of hyperdrive (which is to say, pretty close) then the black hole is going to kill you. That's part of why hyperdrive is never used for anything except travel and escape.

On another note, I think the reason they didn't recognize BB-88's piece was because it wasn't a well known sector of the galaxy. Not a whole lot of places in the star wars universe have planets that sustain life with 0 population unless they're unknown locations.

The main part of a fast hyperdrive is supposedly the computer that plots the course in real time. Bodies in space cast something called gravity shadows in hyperspace which will still destroy ships. That's why it was impressive that the Falcon could make the Kessel Run in a small distance (instead of time), because the computer could calculate a route around the black hole in the Kessel Run better faster than other ships, meaning he could take shortcuts around it. So obstacles could certainly play a role in following the map, as you may have to exit hyperspace and fly manually through some crazy stuff before finding a clear hyperspace route again.

Regarding the map piece, I just don't accept that there could be massive swaths of space that the Falcon's computer (or the entirety of the Resistance's computer logs) couldn't determine from the hologram. Even if there weren't names on the systems, a computer just needs to match the geometry of those systems with known maps. And there were dozens and dozen of stars in that piece (millions/billions, if it's actually a slice of the galaxy.

Plus, he was standing in a random green island, that just looked very fucking dumb. I expected Luke to be hiding in remote Dagobah like Yoda or at least somewhere that looked improbable, meditating for weeks at a time without food or water, using only the force to stay alive, like Starkiller did.

They can only fit so much into movies, which is what bums me about the two-hour long standard that movies have, I always feel like it's never enough. Personally I think the story will become more interesting and developed with the sequels, and episode seven was just a way to bring everyone back together for the new trilogy.
User avatar
#15 - novus (01/01/2016) [-]
I agree. I kind of feel like they rushed to fit so much in, and we just have to trust it will all be better once we can watch them as a trilogy. I was kind of hoping for a really good almost stand-alone type of movie that easily opens itself up to new sequels (like A New Hope was). But, maybe that's impossible when you're trying to make a movie that has to bridge generations in the middle of a bigger story. I just feel like they could have cut some things out, or increased the run time by a little bit and tightened up some of the story elements.

If they don't show that she's a strong female lead then is she even a strong female lead?

Truth be told I was hoping to really like Rey in the movie. But they just made her like...really strong out of nowhere for no reason. Plus the Finn and Poe bromance is so awesome that they ended up stealing the show to me.
User avatar
#159 - novus (12/30/2015) [-]
Well, I think they did show she was strong. They showed it in the first scenes of her adventuring through the wreckage, they showed it by her trapped but surviving in a system that's treating her like trash, and they showed it by her being willing to give up seeing her parents in exchange for doing the right thing.

I wasn't saying they didn't show her acting strong, I just think it's dumb that they felt the need to also display it with dialogue that felt forced. At some point you end up creating a caricature of a "strong female lead" instead of just letting her be one.
