mastercolossus (04/21/2015) [-] an f-22 raptor is like spun glass. not a flying fortress like the star destroyer is. in order for the star destroyer to be beyond repair it would need to have a severely broken keel. even with a bent or only cracked keel it could be saved. as far as software goes you remember how r2d2 was able to access it all and operate systems just by connecting? the software in a star destroyer is designed for simplicity and modularity. meaning it was designed to be surrounded by tons of foot soldiers to keep anyone from screwing with it. and military design of our world cannot be compared with theirs. in our military there is only one main set of engines in a destroyer. its done that way to maximize potential speed and efficiency. if they get taken out its dead in the water with nothing as backup because it can be towed to a shipyard for repairs. in space you dont have that luxury. it needs to work or everyone dies. | ||

mastercolossus (04/21/2015) [-] you arent quite understanding what happens when a ship of that size crashes. another thing is that durasteel is extremely resilient. and the fact that the bridge hasnt collapsed and there are no obvious keel ruptures on the outside means it was shot down in low altitude. the level of redundancy in a ship like that means that half if not most of the systems have survived. the ship could have kept flying it was just a matter of rerouting power probably. and you would only need a few mini flying droids with diagnostic tools and maybe a welder and one more sophisticated droid like a clone wars engineer droideka(i think thats how its spelled) all that comes to less than 125k in credits. not that much really. as for parts replacement you could just take out a few subsystems that werent working and turn them into parts to pay for it. in the end though it probably could still fly if you reroute power effectively and then just repair conduits. I would reckon, given the scale and complexity of it, that if there was even the slightest damage to the Hypermatter reactor, you might be in over your head. Hell the thing is so big it protrudes from the bottom of the ship! And I wouldn't be surprised if reactors of that scale really do need the shipyard capabilities of a place like Kuat. And I highly doubt that any backup power system would be strong enough to repulse the ship off the ground. In a stable orbit, backup systems could easily keep the ship functioning, but a stationary grounded ship of that size would require an absolutely immense amount of power to get off the ground (hence why they are built in space). TLR Hypermatter reactor or bust. Probably too hard to repair yourself, so bust. #96 -
mastercolossus (04/21/2015) [-] you do realize it vents fuel if it becomes unable to operate safely right? and the thing has enough backup reactors and generators to power it to make it level and turn it into a fortress like i wanted. and besides i could just rent out the residential sections to tourists. I dunno. It's like saying if an F-22 raptor crash landed in your backyard that, given enough time, you could make it fly again. Even if there aren't major structural problems, the knowledge of the systems and how to operate/repair them are guarded military knowledge. You, as someone with a shed full of normal tools, would probably not be able to "given enough time" it back into the air. Plus it's all flown electronically, so if the software is damaged in any way you're also rebuilding the software from scratch somehow. I can't even imagine how interconnected the software would have to be on something as massive as a star destroyer. Even if most of it is stored in the bridge, can you imagine the problems you'd have if it detects several systems and their corresponding computers are completely destroyed? I bet it has safeties so that you couldn't even initialize a launch if certain systems are offline. And there's no manual on how to fix it or reprogram it, because it's military property; a military that doesn't even exist anymore. #123 -

anon (04/21/2015) [-] then again, making her fly shouldnt be the goal. if any auxiliary reactors are still producing power, they could theoretically power any remaining turbolaser/ion cannons. #48 -
mastercolossus (04/21/2015) [-] get generators going. activate repulsors. level the ship.all while getting droids to get subsystems going. doesnt need to go into space just need to get enough power for shields and correcting its positioning so i can have me a fortress of awesome. after a few years of tlc i might be able to bring it up to speed enough to go into space but i would just want to be able to say i live inside a star destroyer. Well, I don't know if you've ever seen anybody try to repair a car after a really major accident, but it just doesn't work like that usually. The gap between "crashed ship" and "get generators going" could be so monumental it would be a showstopper right there. What if it's destroyed? Are these droids you speak of doing all the technical work? Where are you getting money to replace systems on a capital ship? And I don't mean to shit on your dreams at all, this is fantasy of course, and having a star destroyer fort would be awesome! But if you've got advanced droids that are capable of rebuilding entire ships, and the money to buy capital ship subsystems, you are obviously a well-off individual capable of running a shipyard. I say turn the star destroyer into scrap and make an awesome functional ship. #50 -

| My dad's job is to specifically overlook these kinds of jobs. Usually they are done in shipyards with dry docks so that the entire ship can be reached without having to go through water and then the dock will be filled back up with water. It is the safest way to do that kind of job. I am sure the people who did this job knew exactly what they were doing, but I am also sure that their asses could have made diamonds out of charcoal as well. I am not trying to argue and say either of us are the correct ones, I just think that it would have been a safer but much longer job if it was done by dry dock, which now thinking about it, not every shipyard might have the means of doing that. | ||
