Well, yay for Ontario, my cousin in Texas on the other hand gets paid less than min wage(I think min wage for him would be 7.50 for somesuch) and they expect his tips to cover it. He's done the math and usually only make over min wage five days to a week(his payperiods are every two weeks).

He'd love to get a better job too, but he's searching already, has had no luck and can't risk pissing off his employers and getting fired by saying anything about it.

This is the kind of stuff that happens all the time too, and not just in America, but Europe as well.
User avatar #16 - nothingatall (06/13/2014) [-]
Thats when where you work(and how good at making tips) you are comes into play, I know servers, who despite making less than minimum wage, can walk away with double what I make in a night, not counting their wage, not saying thats everyone, or every night, I'm just saying that if money is going anywhere in the restaurant industry, some should be thrown at the kitchen, cuz thats where the actual food part of a dinner happens
User avatar #18 - veirianmayne (06/14/2014) [-]
So essentially if you are part of the charismatic group of people that can pull off the charming smile despite oppressive bills and a bleak living situation and be cheerful, then hey, I guess you're set!

If you're part of the other eighty or so percent of servers though you're pretty much shit for luck.

That and the whole thing is majorly situational on all levels.

Also, it depends on the place you're serving at. At the higher end places a cook makes the meal and then a server brings it out, but at cheaper places sometimes they do both, such as my cousin in Texas, who makes drinks, food and serves, and has been told by people that he doesn't deserve a tip since he 'just walks the food about'.

That's not even keeping in mind that I worked at a place where the cooks got to sit, rest, drink beverages and eat on shift while the servers constantly stayed on their feet, had to mind their manners and put up with people pissed off at them due to shitty days at work.

You kind of have to understand that everything, everywhere, is situational, but most of the time servers get the short end of the stick.

Do I think servers necessarily deserve management wage? No, but they should be making the wage they work for, not under min wage and hope they get nice people or are on the same charismatic scale as Adolf Hitler.

Any heroes you recommend that are fun/rewarding? I'm D3 on League so I thikn I have a decent grasp on mechanics, if not game knowledge. Well that's the thing with the current meta (or at least what I saw of it) we go into long games of +35min and at this point the supports I like to play become (lesh+sk would be my favorites) a walking stun and wards which isn't fun. My friends can't carry for shit so we end up loosing. I am also annoyed by the fact that strats such as backdooring seem to be rewarded and encourage (yes I would pop a bottle of champagne if they removed Nature Faggot). Overall I end up going for smite since the supports will comtribute more to the lategame.

Just putting my two cents in, because I play mainly League and I've tried DOTA but quit. The thing about Dota is, and I might get redthumbed to hell for this, but I honestly don't like the graphics/feel/atmosphere of Dota. It doesn't feel as impactful when you're fighting a hero, and the spells, while visually appealing, don't have the same umph for me as throwing a Zigg's bomb or getting that Jinx Ult or J4 lockdown (and ye i know that shit is kinda buggy).

In theory, I think I would've loved Dota. Interatctive environment, cool Day/Night feature, awesome heroes, but the game just doesn't have the same feel for me.

you are right with the AP thing, but then again i think it comes down to the mindset of the playerbase. i personally like the idea behind AP as it gives you the ability to "carry" on a caster more so then it does in DOTA (atleast when you are far into the game).
All in all it probbly comes down to the fact that even though the games are so similar, the way they are played "everything from how you lane to the importance of a jungler in lol compared to DOTA" is very very different and as such speaks to 2 entirely different groups of players. that is probbly also the reason for the lack of "understanding" between people that only play one of the games.

nono, dont get the wrong impression, i myself have played both games (not to the same extent tho) and i was just wondering what you thought was so different. i personally cant see that many differences. i must agree with you on the attribute system tho. it does make it harder for Dota to balance their champions as the stats are not just "increase attack damage by X and magic damage by X" like in LoL.
User avatar #12 - nothingatall (06/10/2014) [-]
they are, and for myself, I can sit down and be competent or better in either game(more-so dota than lol atm), but dota is a lot less noob friendly, based on what I've seen. I do have to disagree though, i find that dota is a lot better balanced than league for 3 reasons, in my head
1.Icefrog>Guinsoo
2.AP makes lol insanely difficult to balance
3.No new hero every 2 weeks

I like sharing experience points with other players.
I also like how we don't have to unlock anything.
I also like how we get ''parts'' of ''skins'' for free every 2 game or so.
I also like how you can deny farm by executing your own minion.
I also like how you can make your tower invincible for 3 seconds when enemy 5s your lane and starts taking the tower.
I love how teleport is bought, and is not a spell.
I love how you can use shops inside the forest without going back.
I love how you can't recall unless your hero/heroine has a teleportation shit.
I love how you have to travel inside the forest with a chance of getting ambushed by the enemies, just to get your item completed in the mystery shop.
I love how you can have a flying donkey or whatever carrier skin you bought to carry your items.
I love how you can change the server you're going to log-in without paying any shit; instead just changing preferable server list.
I love how there was a Player vs. Enviroment mode.
And yes, before you say I don't know League of Legends.
I just became Diamond III yesterday, it's so easy to farm in that game.

ok. any chance that you could give and example of such an "additional mechanic" since as far as i know there are no mechanics that are so different in the 2 games that i would call it a "dota-only" or a "LoL-only" maybe with the exeption of last hitting your own creeps in dota to take exp away from the oponent.
#29 - nanako (06/15/2014) [-]
Universal/composite/mixed damage, mute, pause, unit armour types, uphill miss chance, jungle creep stacking, orb walking and orb stacking.

And not to mention, how the fuck do illusions work with modifiers (like diffusal blade, which randomly seems to ignore the normal rules)

I don't like these mechanics, they're all obscure, annoying and unintuitive crap which drag the game down. i still think dota 2 is superior, but these are often points of confusion for moderately experienced players.
User avatar #7 - nothingatall (06/10/2014) [-]
denying, orbs, stacking, primary attributes, there's like, 6 status effects that league has no mirror of, buybacks, not to mention a more varied item and hero base(simply by having less base attributes, they have a little more room for flavour whilst still being balanced), but this feel a lot like a dota vs lol conversation, and thats kinda pointless
#11 - dreadstream (06/10/2014) [-]

well, the heros fall into 3 groups, strength, agility and intelligence. Strength increases HP and HP regen, Agi increases AS and armour, Int increases mana and mana regen. Each point of stats will also increase the damage of a hero of the same type(eg. huskar, who is a strength hero, gains 19hp, .03hp/s and 1 damage from each point of strength he gains). On-Hit effects all called orbs in Dota, and orb effects do not stack(mostly...), crits stack with everything but other crits(they stack, but you should literally never try to stack them).

well, Drow Ranger is basically Ashe minus the stun, but with 2 actual steroids, usually run position 1(long lane farmer with a support), sniper is similar, tho can be run as a mid, viper is a mid who can build mostly tanky items due to his op as shit kit, huskar has the most broken passive in game, and is 1 of the 2 ranged strength heros, can go literally anywhere, probably some of the easiest carries(ranged, kits that don't require too much team synergy). For more of the bursty assassin types, I'd suggest Nyx assasin, because I love his ability to punish intel heros(mid/support), Slark has amazing get-out-of-fail-free atm(carry/mid), most of your heavy nukers are pos 5s, cuz spells do the same amount of damage no matter how much gold you've amassed(except for ahgs)

I'm not gonna recommend carrying, there's a lot of pressure involved, mid sorta has the same issue. Wow dude, thank you so much. I've always wanted to play Dota2, but it confused the shit out of me hopefully this helps. If you want you can add me on steam, if you want to teach me haha.

yeah, no problem, i rather enjoy teaching people about it, just takes a lot to get into, and to anyone else reading this, add Ron Swanson Dressed as Batman for all your dota 2 needs

Yeah, and the mana costs are ridiculous for someone who's used to league. I played zeus and was always oom. And I did not know about the no ap part, also i had no idea what to buy. So far I've played Bounty Hunter, Zeus, Sniper and a guy with passive effects
User avatar #183 - nothingatall (06/10/2014) [-]
Zeus does have mana issues, usually gets a bottle, if i recall correctly, the base passive mana regen in lol is higher, but its easier to get mana in dota, biggest issue while laning is that skills arent as spammable as lol, but tend to do more(not necessarily damage, cuz ap)
User avatar #184 - vikingfaen (06/10/2014) [-]
So if you could recommend one hero, for one lane (preferably the easiest) what would it be? In LoL I'm a mid and adc main. I like to play the squishy, high dmg/burst heroes.
User avatar #185 - nothingatall (06/10/2014) [-]
I'm not gonna recommend carrying, there's a lot of pressure involved, mid sorta has the same issue. If you actually want to get into dota, I'd suggest going on the wiki and reading up on heros and mechanics, cuz I'm gonna run out of characters before I can explain everything about dota(i have 1700 hours played, I know a fair bit)
User avatar #186 - vikingfaen (06/10/2014) [-]
The good thing is that I have all the last hitting and kiting mechanics from LoL, so that's not hard. And I'm really digging that you can deny cs.
User avatar #189 - nothingatall (06/10/2014) [-]
but zeus, lina, skywrath mage, ogre magi, and queen of pain can all be run midlane nukers(pos 3 or so), bottle>bloodstone>ahgs works for all except qop, who skips the bloodstone
User avatar #187 - nothingatall (06/10/2014) [-]
well, Drow Ranger is basically Ashe minus the stun, but with 2 actual steroids, usually run position 1(long lane farmer with a support), sniper is similar, tho can be run as a mid, viper is a mid who can build mostly tanky items due to his op as shit kit, huskar has the most broken passive in game, and is 1 of the 2 ranged strength heros, can go literally anywhere, probably some of the easiest carries(ranged, kits that don't require too much team synergy).
User avatar #188 - vikingfaen (06/10/2014) [-]
How do I know what to buy though? I follow the recommended items but they still confuse me since i don't know what heroes scale with.
User avatar #191 - nothingatall (06/10/2014) [-]
well, the heros fall into 3 groups, strength, agility and intelligence.

I think that i am mostly a reasonable and rational person, not to say that I don't have problems(depression, basically haven't done anything productive in my life for 4 years or so etc), but I do quite like starting **** on the internet, especially when the post was as dumb as the one i replied to
