I am not bitter, nor will ever turn so; I am simply trying to compel you to seek nobler pleasures.

I would prefer it if you abstained from insulting me by calling me "arrogant". I had warned all to desist further reading—as my comment could be in some way or another offensive—for a reason.

You may enjoy whatever you wish to enjoy; if you find it satisfactory to enjoy "cheap" pleasures, then so be it. I am saddened by your predilection for such distractions when you have access to so much great emotions and thoughts.

Always remember that something being natural does not mean it is good, and that most human features require in their enhancement conditioning, cultivation and education.

"And that's not going to change." I have to disagree with you here. There is a reason, I believe, wherefore some are more compelled to consume works of higher quality. I leave the reason to your discretion.

What's been bothering me the most is you say all this while frequenting FunnyJunk, which is known more for dick jokes than philosophically analyzing the truths of the universe.

Surely you enjoy your fair share of "vacuous" humor.

If you fear being offended by my judgments of taste, read no further. I need to rant, is all.

I find it an utmost immoral negligence to allow oneself to disregard the great works of literature.

Throughout history most men and women wanted nothing but entertainment and distractions from artists and writers. Despite this, some of these artists created works of true and painful beauty; in which the mind's travail and aching is expressed; in which the innate misery of human existence itself is depicted; and in which all this is done with unyielding love for life and all its intricacies.

One good example is Johann-Sebastian Bach. He could have played the fiddle on the street, amusing passers-by's coins out of their purses and into his. He did not. He refused the existence of an entertainer, a mere distraction. He was a thoughtful, sensible man, and he composed instead music that speaks to the heart through the mind. Music that expressed his pain (felt towards most of his children's premature deaths, his own loneliness and the popular lack of recognition of his talent) in the utmost beautiful way possible; music that remained thoroughly unheard of till the 19th century.

We were born into a world in which religion is slowly whittling away (and thank God for that...). This world leaves us without much spiritual aid; by spiritual, I mean meaningful and beautiful. As Nietzsche (and most modernists) said, art is our last resort for spiritual understanding and enlightenment, and I fear that it was actually the postmodernists who were right; as Huxley expressed in Brave New World, our distractions and ''stupid'' pleasures will end up destroying us.

I cannot understand why one would choose pleasant yet vapid distractions over lucid, meaningful and beautiful truths.

This utterly retarded pony show is exactly that. ''Friendship is magic!'' More vacuous words were never spoken. There is no truth there; only a path to ignorance.

Sorry, if I offended (not really).

You come across as incredibly arrogant, but there may be some truth there. The morals are centrally aimed at children, though can ring true as a reminder to adults. It's bright, cheerful, and mainly intended to entertain.

Humans as a whole will seek "cheap" pleasure, and that's not going to change. So continue to spurn it yourself in favor of your own preferences, but down let it turn you hateful and bitter to to your fellow human beings.

That my friend is where I can agree yet disagree. I for one greatly like the show, a lot because of how supportive and unusally kind the fandom is but I see your point about great works of literature and the like. I do my best to submerse myself and learn more about meaningful works of art, music, and culture in general. It's healthy to be balanced in almost all regards as a human being. That means while you should be kind and honest, sometime you simply need to be cold and straighforward and while you can definitely watch science documentaries or examine Bach's works it's not going to kill you to sit back and enjoy something that isn't enlightning or educational but perhaps entertaining or encouraging. I know you have no reason to like the show but it won't hurt to just try some of the episodes, yes I've been a fan for almost two years now and there's some parts that make me gag a bit. And at least you seem to be one of the more intelligent folk that dislike the show, rather than "hur durr bronys are faggots"
#581 - migueldecervantes (05/30/2014) [-]
I am happy to see that you at least agree in some ways.

Of course, abnegation is perfectly fine (that is what FunnyJunk is to me), but—in my opinion, mind you—there are some forms of abnegation that are reprehensible and should not be pursued. I will try to give you a clear example:

On the one hand, we have video games, popular fiction (GoT or Harry Potter), most mainstream movies, etc. These are a means of escapism, but not the bad one. People know that they are leaving reality for a bit, not to experience something more real than life itself, but less real and more enjoyable.

On the other hand, we have shows like My Little Pony, "Cosplaying" and most fandoms. These take escapism to a whole new level.

The My Little Pony fandom, to my knowledge, is reputed as being the nicest one. "How could one have a problem with that?" Well, I do when niceties are only veils for delusions and bitterness.

Life is hard; everyone knows that. But deluding oneself into believing that everything is fine because "Friendship is magic!" and that everything will be fine in the end if everyone is nice and a pony is rather similar to religion. It is an obsession with an illusion.

Life is scary, yet awe-inspiring and wonderful, but to see its incredible wonders one has to see the bad bits of it as well. This is only possible when one is ready for realness and truth. Illusions are pernicious to this endeavor, which, I believe, is the only thing today that still has any potential left to help mankind out.

This "speech" goes not to you, my friend. If you like the show as a means of pure abnegation and only watch it for your own pleasure while maintaining a firm grip on reality, then you are doing nothing wrong in my book.

Also, my book is not the Bible or the Qu'ran, I am open to your criticisms and up for debate. Also, I'd like to hear your reasons for liking the show (not the fandom, mind you, but the show).
User avatar #590 - monkeysniper (05/30/2014) [-]
Well they aren't for delusions, the world is a cold place, everyone knows that, so it can be nice to associate with those in a community that try to maintain a nicer microcosm of the world for at least a short while. Well I do like the show because oddly enough it's better written than many other shows I've seen, characters actually grow and meet goals and change based on prior experiences whereas most shows struggle to maintain a status quo season after season. But also it teaches lessons that should be heeded in general and the sad thing is very little of society does that.

That's just like making a hybrid from a kids show and a shounen anime. Maybe that's the hype factor? I didn't see anything I liked. I mean, if you are looking for action like that you could also watch Kill la Kill. Man I loved that. But this? Meh. But, hey, that's just my opinion.
