Sorry mate, but some of us quit for a reason. I can't speak for anyone who ever quit RuneScape, but the way Jagex used their flagship franchise has left me to do nothing but reject anything past 2008.

This comes from a player who used to play back when RuneScape Classic was the only game and it's competitor wasn't called World of Warcraft but Diablo 2.

That video? It isn't RuneScape. It looks like RuneScape, maybe plays like RuneScape, perhaps even sounds like RuneScape - but it isn't the RuneScape I know and love.

I "won" RuneScape. "Won" being subjective here, one can not win an MMO, but after I achieved my long term goal - grinding fishing so hard I could buy full Guthix - despite a continuously collapsing economy and more botters than anything else - I had nothing left to play for. Nothing.

I've tried again, once, but it lasted a week then that feeling was gone. I've tried twice more since, one time on a private server running a 2006 version (which was shut down due to Jagex) and later on the official 2007 version (which I quit because I had to cancel my credit card and decided not to renew because I have to save money , yes RuneScape isn't an expensive game, but money is money .) Either time it probably helped I had to start over.

That is RuneScape to me, it has the soul the new one doesn't. I logged in and was instantly hooked.

It was always the butt of every joke, but I have realised one thing over the years.

I am probably that one guy who played RuneScape for the graphics. Also, they killed my God and replaced him with a faction of Fedora-tippers, as if they wanted me to weep blood for my dead childhood.

Again, I don't speak for others, but my opinion on present day RuneScape is probably best addressed in a tongue as archaic as my experience, love and dedication to RuneScape:

Pedicabo ego vos et irrumabo.

I agree with some of your points. Most prominently, the fact that RS3 isn't really runescape. The game itself feels too..for lack of a better word "Corporate" It used to feel like an adventure game where you progressed your character to be the best around. Now days, it feels like a money making scheme run by the same people who maid the former game.

you do realize jagex rolled back a set of servers to 2007 and has been running poles that have to be approved by 75% of the community to introduce content based on what is actually wanted by the community for the last year?

Guess you aren't the one I should ask to proof read my 100k+ novel pile of written crap then.

So you liked it, not despite the graphics being awful, but because the graphics were awful?

The past few years' decisions have basically been trying to fix what you said: them being the butt of every joke. It's not good business to be well known as "that crappy MMO I used to play before I found something better."

They're like some teenager trying to change how they dress and act to redefine themselves. Whether that's a good or a bad thing depends on the person you ask.

Sorry, had to cut down my response, apparently my opinion on RuneScape is "TL;DR" doubt you want an "ancient" man like me droning on about the nostalgia.

Got to admit my faults now, you are right, Jagex were the one who held the knife that slit RuneScape's throat, but the players were the ones who guided it.

Jagex did what they had to do, they listened to the fan base and the fan base killed the game with their ideas.
The Wilderness vanished as people cried out on PKing being unfair (though Jagex had tried to bend over backwards to make The Wilderness a place you didn't randomly wander into).
The free market was removed to combat the bots that plagued the game and deflated the economy.
The Grand Exchanged was introduced, even I briefly thought it was a good idea, but only ever used it twice - to get that full Guthix.

I can't blame Jagex for trying to please the community, but the game remains dead to me.

We killed it, no kill is too strong a word: We lobotomised it, we the players lobotomised RuneScape to remove what we didn't like. Jagex held the chisel, we struck with the hammer.

*insert further rantings about Guthix being killed off here* Seriously, I'm pissed about that one though.

i know its a random question, i was discussing this with my mates, getting nostalgic about RS, were u an isolationist player? u didnt really get into the community and isolated yourself to do what you wanted? also what was your favorite bits of the game (more of a lifestyle than game)
User avatar #105 - caffeinecommissar (07/04/2014) [-]
Those are actually pretty good and valid questions.

Well, let me start out by saying one should not try to copy what I did. Not because it was virtually dangerous, but because I were and always will be a giant n00b. I liked the grinding for some reason, and when I tried the 2007 version I got 68 fishing in a matter of days. So really, not the funniest way to play and not the one that makes you most dosh in-game.

Were I isolationist? Yes, but not by choice, if I had someone to chat to while grinding everything was fine and dandy, I'd make new friends while watching my EXP go up, crack a few jokes here and there when a random even occurred (E.g "Don't pick the baguette, she'll stick it up your arse!" when The Sandwich Lady appeared).

My fondest memories were having the whole Fishing Guild engage in a rather convolute discussion on the merits of the player driven economy and how bots were screwing us over.

But, if you flipped a coin, chances are that it would be five heads in a row before something like that happened. So most of the time, I found a spot for fishing with a good chance of other people, but most of the time it was silence so I just popped on a film and watched it while grinding away.

Mining on the other hand, unlike fishing, had a different tactic, avoid the common areas and instead use the mines no-one knew.

All in all, I think my play style was rather proletarian, I mean that in the least political sense of the word, I liked to grind my ass off and work for the money I had instead of the way of the merchant to riches or gamble it all on player killing. If I could fish thousands of lobsters or swordfish and sell it to other players, I were happy because I felt I was contributing to the game.

Of course when the 2007 version rolled around, I mainly just grinded so I could make money to buy good combat equipment so I could do quests. But still, grinding was without a doubt what I spent 90% of my time doing.

(To be continued in next post)

If you and some friends are feeling nostalgic, by all means sign up and play the 2007 version. Perhaps if you need to grind, you should each focus on a different area, it wouldn't make much sense for all of you to mine or fish.

But overall I'd encourage you to each find one useful skill to practise, in order to help one another be prepared for combat, and thus the many possibilities of quests, PK-ing trips and slaying monsters together.

RuneScape can be fun alone, but as a group chatting to each other is a lot more fun while grinding, and if anything, watch movies or something while grinding.

i tried to go back to 07 for 6 months, but i guess runescape is best kept to my teenage years, locked away in the nostaligia. but seriously although i have amazing memories, for me it also seems like a dark and desolate era of my life, once my friends quit, it just became so isolating and grinding got depressing, you ever feel you lost touch with reality while playing it?
User avatar #183 - caffeinecommissar (07/05/2014) [-]

You fucking philistine! You believe everything the man tells you, dont you? You probably believe we landed on the moon in 1969 dont you?
Hitler was actually born in 2651 America illinois and then sent back in time, as a part of a century spanning plan to besmudge the proud European name and glorify America in the eyes of history.
Dont believe everything that the man shoves down your throat!
