anon (12/26/2015) [-] Except not really. The practice of inbreeding dogs only became popular a couple of centuries ago. Ancient pure breeds have no evidence of inbreeding in them, and are healthy dogs. Selective breeding =/= inbreeding.  If we didn't selectively breed dogs where would we be as a species? Through selectively breeding purebreds we have dogs that had a natural, predictable ability to herd/guard/drive livestock, track/flush/kill game in all manner of environments relative to the game they are pursuing in heat/cold/damp/brush/river/etc, track missing people, defend against predators, hunt vermin to keep grain safe and prevent disease from spreading, pull heavy sleds through otherwise uninhabitable landscapes for transportation, guard property and be used in police and army work... Many are still functional working dogs. Perhaps some don't serve a purpose as they used to, but without them throughout history we wouldn't have achieved certain things as easily. We would just have more wolves around eating our sheep instead of having a border collie to herd them, or a great Pyrenees to protect them, or an irish wolfhound to kill the wolves for us. To say we interfered as if making these wonderful breeds was an inessential aspect of our history is an insult. #6 -

The benefit of old friends is being able to be stupid with them. This is the best thing that you will hear all day. Maybe even for the rest of your life. And it means absolutely nothing. I hope that doesn't make you feel to sad.
