What exactly is wrong with emoticons?

I use emoticons a lot. They're more convenient than uploading an entire image(which takes almost 20 seconds longer).

I don't use them because I'm stupid though. I use them to convey a sense of tone to my text. Whether that tone is sarcastic, as it was in that case, happy, innoyed, or something in between, I can probably find an emoticon for it.

I don't usually use them outside of texting. Whenever I get on FJ or any other online forum, I rarely use them. The :D face is usually the only exception.
