Shame on you.
Do you know nothing of economics?

Piracy killed things like Pandemic games, Blockbuster, DVD Rental Stores, and it's currently shitting on the Movie, Music, and vidya industries.

Think of it economically.
Corporation A produces a digital Product, they've spent thousands in capital.
Corporation A's product gets pirated.
Corporation A Ends up in the fucking hole because they spent a lot on Capital with zero profit.

THQ Hint Hint.
#170 - N. Korean citizen (01/21/2013) [-]
dvd rental stores? what kind of muppet are you, it wasnt piracy that killed all these, it were the producers clinging to ancient technology like the dvd and cd, expecting people to still go out and buy / rent their shit that hardly anyone under 50 uses any more.

Had the movie and music industry adapted in the beginning and invested in online stores back when downloading was new, piracy wouldnt be 1% of the problem it is for them now.

Piracy killed Blockbuster? Blockbuster killed blockbuster. You're either not old enough to remember or misguided. Blockbuster would try to sell movies for 29.99 that walmart had for 5.00. Not only that but return a movie later and you'd get charged a late fee and a fuckin restock fee. I rented a movie and returned it 1 hour late and had to pay 8.99 for it. It was the last time I ever fucked with them again.

If you're going to say piracy killed blockbuster then why is it Redbox thrived? Netflix thrived until they shot theirselves in the foot with price increases.

Why would I give blockbuster 5.99 for a 2 day game rental when I can pay gamefly 8.99 and get 2 games at a time for the entire month?

Also, THQ is your example?

www.ign.com/articles/2012/07/18/thq-sued-over-udraw-tablets

the Udraw single handedly fucked them, they were advised many times by private consulting firms not to release it. they had over 1.4 million unsold units and they had more than 100 million dollars less than they expected.

Think of it virtually
Corperation A spends 150 million dollars developing something.
Corporation A makes 50 million dollars total
Corperation A ends up in the fuckin hole because they spent 150 million dollars on HARDWARE that didn't sell for shit.

Piracy may be hurting the gaming industry a little, but not like they'd have you believe. They see 100 copies downloaded and think it's 100 units of profit they could have. When the reality is, maybe only 5 of those people would have bought it. the smart thing to do would be to make a game free to play to a point, and more content costs you money. they won't do that though because they want you to buy a game and if it's shit, you're just stuck.

Go ahead, red thumb me shitless, but now you're at least partially informed.

Like one legal suit can destroy a company like THQ.
The problem is they barely made any profits after Armageddon.
Blockbuster got mega-wrecked when they started treating their business like a library, I agree, especially when they sold all their VHS stock and went to DVD.
What's wrong with Netflix? I don't mind paying 8.00 USD for it. They still thrive, even though they lose some revenue now and again.
Lolol Red thumbs.
I'm not that kind of guy, bro. I respect your opinions.
Piracy is a cancer, it kills companies more and more, every day, sapping 50 dollars here, 25 dollars there.
Needless to say, it's a loss in Profit.
THQ Did overspend in their capital, but that's because they anticipated many more sales than they received.
"Think of it Virtually"
Digital Media is a touchy subject. Mainly because corporations lose millions in profits, and because it's Digital Media, there really isn't all that much one company can do about it.
I mean look what ubi did, their piracy protection software fucked over customers more than it did the actual pirates.
I'm not referring only to the gaming industry, by the way. I'm referring to music and movies as well.
Yes, what you're proposing works just fine, and I wholeheartedly agree. I mean shit, some of the music I find, I hear in TV shows, or are reccommended to me via android (9/10 it's shitty, but every once in a while you get a solid recommendation)
tl;dr
Piracy is theft of profit.
Industries are approaching the problem in all the wrong ways.
Blockbuster had it comming.

But like, this way you could get people potentially interested in your products.
User avatar #135 - alfjnn (01/21/2013) [-]
There's promotions for a reason.

I sincerely doubt you'll find a band you've never heard of by outright pirating it. What would your search query be? "BAND I'VE NEVER HEARD OF"

Generally, you should have heard of said band before you decide to pirate their music.

Most people find music through friends, or on youtube, or groove-shark.

For me, I just traverse the depths of youtube.
User avatar #138 - newposterintown (01/21/2013) [-]
I know, but if I hear a song I like from a group I might get the album by pirating and then decide to buy it later.
#183 - demonryder (01/21/2013) [-]

Then something is lost. Yea sure, I agree that these companies aren't losing a huge chunk of their billions as is, but it is still theft. I'd only support anonymous fully if they were taking a robing hood approach against the companies. But I haven't seen that happen yet, unless I missed something.

I love when a server has like a shitty attitude and gives sub-par service then complains when they get no tip. If you want a tip, work for it. It's not an entitlement.
