I was actually talking about and inability to cope with technological doomadids.

1) Making gifs isn't really a hard thing to do. Nor is it THAT easy. You can do it both online or offline depending on what you need.
If you captured/recorded a little snippet from a video, you can just upload to any conversion site and they'll turn it into a gif for ya. Quality is always great, tho.
If you want to do a custom thin, like use frame or snippets from different sources or add text or special effects, then it's better if you do it offline. I use IrfanView to capture frames from videos and other gifs. And then PhotoScape to edit the frames and then add them all up in it to make a single gif. Best quality (but big file size) guaranteed.
Can give photo-tutorial if ya want.

2) You see anything online that looks like it's moving, just right click and and then clock on 'Save As' or 'Save Image As' and voila, you just saved a gif.

3) To change avatar, just click on 'Change Avatar' on your profile page and then follow the little instructions that show up near you current avvy.

It's not really inability so much as inexperience; I learn through watching people do things, and then attempting them myself. Gimme some time, and I'm sure I'll become great at making gifs.

No need to do the tutorial at this moment since I need to head off soon and won't be able to view it for several hours. Feel free to post it up in your free time though, I am a rather patient person.
