Nobody wants WWIII
You are trying to take something that happened 70 years ago and compare it to the wars we have today. Millions of soldiers were used back then, because technology accounted for that many. We no longer use bolt action rifles en masse we use semi automatic and fully automatic rifles en masse. Our "indirect" fire can hit whatever we want within 1 foot for some weapons systems. Just because our wars today aren't play by play the same as the wars of our past, do not think that they are not world wars. Less ordinance and less men, because of technology. Total war is no longer an effective tactic because the enemy of the west is not state actors they are multinational non state actors, ISIS, Al Qaeda, etc. Again, I don't care about thumbs, I just want you guys to get your head out of your ass. World War 3 did not have to be on the scale of destruction of death and tons of explosives used as WW1 or 2. War changes, tactics change, technology changes. No longer do thousands of men line up for a bayonet charge. I repeat for your convenience, more countries were involved in OIF/OEF than WW2 or WW1. The battles and attacks are occurring in more countries than WW2 or WW1. Different times, different enemy as well as type of enemy, different tactics, different technology.
I guess this boils down to how you define a world war then, and to be completely honest I do not believe this conflict fits the bill.
The combat zone is basically isolated to the middle east. There is no war waged in countries like the US or Russia, it's merely an occasional terrorist attack. The thing with World War 2 at least is that the theatres of war were globally impactful, it was a war fought across the world. Also there is a common enemy here, whereas the world wars were an interwoven string of alliances that meant many nations fought many nations, not a coalition fighting against terrorist cells and/or the occasional dictator that gets steamrolled anyway. The scope of damage and influence was much, much higher back then for a lot more reasons than simply "we had to use more people because of the technology".
And since tactics change, I believe nukes would be a real issue in a real world war today. There's little to no chance they'll be used in this situation for moral reasons, and the fact that our enemy doesn't possess the means to use them. However if things escalate in N Korea and alliances in Asia/Europe cause a bigger shift of power... then I believe we will have what we call a World War.
What's happening now doesn't constitute that.
Also all those "differents" you are mentioning are telling me you see the differences, you've just convinced yourself this meets your own criteria for a world war. Since the term itself is very loose, it's by a person by person basis on what constitutes a world war. However en masse, no on is going to agree with your view and thus it won't be globally recognized as a world war. And I suppose that's what I'm arguing.

Funny. My main pawn is a Leona expy. Red haired tanker who protects her master like a yandere. Good times. Swapped her out for autonomy, though.
