Came a long way from there... enjoying it still. Never really played malz much since he was very mana hungry. Decided to make my main mid Ziggs or Lux with Kass as my pocket anti-ap.

You just don't need to poke as often as you'd want to
I don't bother poking until the enemy pokes back

Talon is probably my next champ to buy. I already have a set of champs that I love for each lane... all except mid with skins. Just waiting for a good sale to get my mid skin and I'll be set.
