Actually it gets its name from the material it is made from called Cotton Duck which is a type of cotton fabric. It's pretty much the same material that clothes, shoes, canvas etc. are usually made of. It was originally used to seal cargo containers in WW2 (usually ammunition boxes) to keep the cargo dry. Later names such as Duct tape came along because it was used to seal ventilation ducts.
