An upgrade will keep your data perfectly safe, in my experience, but you may be best off with installing the upgrade (so it assigns you a Windows 10 key) and then backing up your data before doing a clean install just to make sure your computer is running at 100%. An upgrade might be just fine, so it's not a terrible idea to fiddle around with it for a while before doing the clean install. There may be issues, there may not be.

An upgrade will leave you with the option to go back to Windows 7, as it keeps all of your old stuff around and even holds on to a backup copy of your old OS. Thing is, that's also ultimately the problem with an upgrade - imagine every problem you have with your old OS amplified by mashing them onto a brand new OS willy-nilly. You may be just fine, but more likely than not you'll have at least some minor problems. Incompatible drivers would get carried over and could cause funkiness, all the junk that everyone gets built up on their harddrive over time would carry over and cause general sluggishness, etc.

Yeah, exactly. It can be a bit of a pain in the short-term (backing up data is never my favorite thing), but long term it could help with a wide range of problems.

Well, operating systems are complex beasts. The fact that all updates don't simply get bundled into one large patch would most likely be related to that. At the end of the day, Windows is substantially more complex than any game, and the consequences of a patch gone bad could be catastrophic given Windows' presence in the business world.

As far as the amount of patches, I'd guess that has to do with the complexity and amount of users. People will be constantly running into bugs and other issues, and there's most definitely years of optimization and security-related fixes to come. It's a pain in the ass, yeah, but it sure beats the alternative.

This is the logic I have to deal with.

Same situation. I dunno what it is with some parents but they hate the idea of you doing something behind locked doors, and worse yet the idea that you have any privacy. My dad replaced all the door knobs in the house with lockless ones. I'm pretty sure they have some sort of subconscious desire to be able to interrupt me when I'm wacking off.

This shit pisses me off. Nobody ever knocks on my door, and in the rare event I do lock it, shit is flipped. God forbid I have some privacy.

Fuck, last time I locked my door my brother damn near broke the door down. In fact, the doorjamb is split in half because of it.

What makes it worse is my mom sometimes locks her door. I mean I can still get it open but its like why the fuck do you do this; especially when I need to shower
(Learned how to get around locks since I was 7. Slip a knife or a card in-between the frame and door and you can trigger the opening)
