You've never had depression.

I have an abusive mother who has treated me like shit my whole life and when i was little and i tried to do something about it she would beat the shit out of me, now if i tried to do something about it i would have the cops called on me for things as simple as slamming my door. My sister moved out before high school was over because she couldn't take it any more. Believe me. I know what it is like to be depressed. But you know what? In the end, the one who decides if you're happy or not is you, and only you. I don't spend my time feeling sorry for myself because i know i can do better. Stop finding excuses as to why your not perfect. Stop letting an imaginary defect become a wall to your happiness and success. And don't you dare tell me that I've never experienced depression. I get over it when i see people doing the right thing for the sake of doing the right thing. I get over it when i see different religions getting along. I get over it when countries that are rich lend a helping hand to countries who are not so fortunate. I get over it when i talk to my friends and i see they care. I get over it when i look in the mirror, and realize that i am stronger than some stupid emotion. Go get a reality check.
#98 - someoneforamoment (11/08/2013) [-]
My mistake. However, you have forgotten that people who still have depression do not realize that. Anybody can climb Mount Everest. Not all try to go to the very top, but nevertheless it's still an achievement. But it looks impossible, and can be incredibly difficult when shit is still going on. I'm not entirely convinced you would be saying the same thing a few years ago before you fought depression. When you're depressed you have to work at it, and when so many things are demanding your time (such as people dragging you kicking and screaming to activities and crap in order to "help") you don't have much of an opportunity to really focus on your issues. So good for you for getting over the hump, but it's still a very real thing for other people.
#252 - nickmandemon (11/09/2013) [-]
My point was that you shouldn't take pills to solve something like depression, because then you're not solving it at all. Because as soon as the pills go away you're like "oh my god now there's nothing i can doooo!" When in reality you're just bitching about your pathetically easy life in comparison to other people in the world.

I'm only really offended by the level of ignorance you're displaying...

You want us to watch a documentary on third world countries? Alright, but only if you promise to take a course in biology/phisiology, and actually understand that the way people think or feel is very much dependent on how much of what types of chemicals the brain is producing.

For instance, I was becoming depressed: didn't want to do what I loved (drawing), started to not care about things, thought about death a lot (not suicide, just death).

Now I'm taking lexapro, it bumps my serotonin levels up, been feeling much better, even stopped thinking about death and shit.
#251 - nickmandemon (11/09/2013) [-]
Or you could just like, you know, deal with your problems instead of relying on pills.

Dude, depression is as real as A.D.D
But just like A.D.D some people are misdiagnosed, and told they have it when in reality, they're just that way and it have nothing to do with an physical disorder.

Serotonin imbalances.
Helps you feel emotions.
When you don't have enough of it,
you have depression.
Any questions?
#253 - nickmandemon (11/09/2013) [-]
In reply to all you people saying that it's like a totally proven scientific fact, i looked it up to see if the scientist used words like "could be" or "possibly" and then i started laughing my ass off because i found a legit scientific website and literally the first thing they said about it was "Our knowledge of the human brain is still fairly limited, therefore we do not really know what actually happens in the brain to cause depression." So yeah nice try. Here's the website by the way: www.blackdoginstitute.org.au/public/depression/causesofdepression/biochemical.cfm

#151 - narutolas (11/08/2013) [-]
THANK YOU. Honestly I've been going my entire life skeptic of depression. I just figured hey, jews under hitlers reign suffering from starvation and muscular dystrophy never turned to one another and said "hey man ive got depression," so it must not be a real thing. But I was just uneducated. Depression needs to be explained on a biological basis more often, and it will be taken more seriously! Now I just feel lucky i don't have it..

Engineer is me, glove is knowledge.
User avatar #100 - Noah (11/08/2013) [-]
Unfortunately, due to chemical imbalances that can occur in the brain, depression can occur without a "real" reason.
User avatar #55 - ningyoaijin (11/08/2013) [-]
I don't blame you for not understanding something you've never experienced, but I can assure you it's a hell of a lot more than "being sad". You don't get depressed due to bad things that happen to you, you get depressed because your brain fucks up and tells you to be depressed. Watching a documentary wouldn't do anything at all.
#59 - nickmandemon (11/08/2013) [-]
Really because this affliction only surfaced in the recent decades, in this society where everyone just feels bad for themselves. You didn't see anyone complaining about being clinically depressed about nothing 100 years ago.
#108 - vobilitus (11/08/2013) [-]
Actually, it has only recently been admitted as a mental disease. 1950, I think it was. You can correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm not sure I understand your reasoning, though. I read your comments, and it seems as though you think that people didn't become depressed before there was a word for it.

Alright, here's my counter then;
Dyslexia doesn't exist.
The Pacific Trash Vortex doesn't actually exist.
The holocaust never happened.
There are no such things as books.
Every invention ever made does not exist.
You don't exist.
I don't exist.
Nobody exists.
Gravity does not exist.

Just because we discover things constantly does not mean that the things you don't understand doesn't exist.
Where it is observable and measurable, we can draw some conclusion of existance. There's a lot of research which has been done in depression. There are also historical examples of depression. You can read about them, as I've heard that you seem to enjoy doing.

Good day to you, Sir.
User avatar #77 - marcassin (11/08/2013) [-]
australia existed before we discovered it, same as depression. People were depressed aswell, just the word didn't exist
#78 - nickmandemon (11/08/2013) [-]
You're missing the point. My point was that people didn't complain of this condition then. You're right. Australia existed before we named it. But its not like people 100 years ago were like "Man i just feel so sad for no reason, i wish there was a word for this!" My point wasn't that it wasn't named yet. It's that it actually didn't exist back then.
#186 - anonymous (11/08/2013) [-]
They didn't say that, because back then, any perceive mental instability resulted in you being locked up in an asylum where they would experiment on you, often painfully so. Now, we understand it on a biological level, we can observe it. Not just in humans, in other animals as well. It's a chemical imbalance, the trigger of which we still don't know, though it appears genetics does play a part. As such, it's much more socially acceptable (and less risky for personal harm) to come forward and admit that you are going through this.

That said, people have been trying to explain to you, but you just seem too dense to get it, so I'm probably just wasting my time with you.

Enough talking shit about Krillin, he sacrifices himself to give 18, his daughter, and all the others a chance at escaping Super Buu on the lookout tower, he let 18 live because she wasn't naturally evil, he fought Kid Buu in the after life, he risked his life to save Dende on Namek, he saved a random woman who he had never met before from Cell, and he always is there trying to do what he can for his friends.

The picture looks more to me that he is guiding people away from the fight so they don't get hurt than running away, and turned back to look out for 18.

You read too much into that.

All I did was point out that someone who is looking for money in a partner wants a provider in their life......it's kind of an obvious observation.

He just sort of gave reasons why someone would want someone who is attractive and then just kinda blew the other side off like "they just want money" like there's no reason behind it. Not to say that it's a good thing to want someone's resources over them as a person, but just putting my two cents in.
#39 - nickmandemon (10/21/2013) [-]
No. Anyone who doesn't want someone, but then wants someone after knowing they have money is in it for the wrong reasons. It's not because she wanted a "provider".She obviously wasn't attracted to him, and only wanted him for money. Thats completely different than liking someone and then being happy that they can provide. She just wanted to use him and probably date someone she actually liked behind his back. There is a reason behind it by the way. Some people are just greedy, terrible wastes of oxygen. Thats why.
User avatar #40 - flemsdfer (10/21/2013) [-]
