I agree, however if someone self diagnose and then seeks help for it, it might be better than thinking you're healthy and feeling like shit. It took me a long time to seek help because i thought i was fine mentally and believing i was just weaker/less worthy than everyone else.

have you tried/considered becoming a musician then? since that seems to be what you love or are u not good enuf or somethin
#153 - madcoww (01/11/2015) [-]
I don't love it enough. I just did it because it was the only thing people praised me for. I thought I was good. I wasn't, or at least not to the level required in a ever shrinking pool of jobs in professional symphonic music. It's like training to become an astronaut and nothing else. You ain't gonna get there by being above average. You have to be exceptional. You have to give up everything else in your life to do it. You have to suffer for it. Once I learned this, I sold my instrument.
#240 - bootswiththefur (01/12/2015) [-]
what? you realized that fact after you got a BA? and by "didn't love it enough" are you saying it's just "meh" to you and only did it ONLY because people praised you for it OR are u saying that you love it a lot but just arent willing to... as you said, "suffer for it" ?

oh sht i just read your reply below where you're perfectly satisfied with your life. i thought you were in the dumps and had nothing left lol. woops. well i guess everything's fine then lol
User avatar #221 - cacti (01/11/2015) [-]
Dude buy another instrument. It's so worth it man. You can charge beginners $20 for 30 minutes to teach them. I only have one student and I make $100 a month teaching beginner level stuff. Trust me bro when I say this, it's an amazing opportunity to make a little extra cash on the side.
#223 - madcoww (01/11/2015) [-]
When did I say I wanted to teach? Besides, why would I want to encourage people down a road that is a complete waste of their time and energy? If instrumental music is something fun, there are funner pastimes. If it is to condition the developing mind, there are other things that will do it better. If they are among the incredibly few who are gifted enough and have the reckless determination to play professionally, they should be getting lessons from someone better.

Yeah, the extra cash would be nice, but I couldn't live with myself. It's like teaching a kid how to slit their wrists or inject heroine. What good would I be doing for the world?
User avatar #224 - cacti (01/11/2015) [-]
Okay first of all fuck you. Complete waste of time eh? I'm 15 and I play the cello. I regularly perform at gigs and weddings. Weddings normally bring in $200 and gigs can vary drastically depending upon how long we play and how hard the music is. I play in a college orchestra and I plan on going to a professional one. Waste of time? Pfffffttt. If you're a fucking loser who can't practice it's a waste of time. Stop being ignorant and actually learn something about it. People who complain they don't get money from it are just fucking bad.

In conclusion, i'll be making more money than you when I become an adult. And I don't see myself regretting the decision.
#226 - madcoww (01/12/2015) [-]
I completely acknowledge that utility of a string quartet at a wedding, but that's the only relatively consistent paying gig any acoustic chamber ensemble can get. You think that you're going to make it into a professional orchestra? You better get real introspective real fast. It better be something that all other pursuits in your life ride shotgun for. It better be something worth enough to you that you work a miserable job just so you can fund your travel expenses to go to failed audition after failed audition. There is no such thing as a casual professional cellist. You better be all in, and I can say right now, the odds are vastly... VASTLY against you doing anything further than getting your masters in music education so that you can perpetuation the system where more children even more ignorant than you go down this costly and pointless pipe dream of professional acoustic instrumental performance musician.
User avatar #230 - cacti (01/12/2015) [-]
Dude. Dude. Within a couple years maybe even now I can join a professional grade orchestra. The ones in my town require skill but are quite easy. My teacher says he wants me to join and he knows my skill and he knows the orchestra. So I think I've got a fair chance. Travel expenses? Yeah because thirty minutes is a real big deal. It seems like you don't know what a professional orchestra is. I don't want to join the fucking New York Philharmonic. There's no way I'm that good. And I will probably never be that good. But, it is well within my grasp to make a comfortable living out of my profession. So I think you should put some more research into performance and making profit as a musician.
#235 - madcoww (01/12/2015) [-]
Oh please, educate me. How much does this orchestra your teacher wants you to join pay? I'd love to have the link to their website because even professional orchestras are going backwards because fewer and fewer people go to shows.

No, with instrumental music you're either a rock star at the cello or your a teacher who leads more poor saps to waste their time.
User avatar #193 - oceanfrank (01/11/2015) [-]
I dont know if this'll help at all... but you might at well do it. you have ABSOLUTELY nothing left to lose so you may as well give it all up and become a musician. You have the skill and the know how apparently and you're already suffering. Take the risk man and do it, you'll be surprised what may come.
#195 - madcoww (01/11/2015) [-]
With all due respect, that is a very foolish idea. I have a cozy little life now that I'm happy with. I have a 9 to 5 job, a beautiful wife, a reliable car, and we're hoping to buy a house this year. Why would I throw that all away from something I'm not willing to chase after tooth and nail? Not to mention I sold my instrument and have been out of practice for 4 years.

You don't have to go to art school to be an artist.
A lot of artists are happy just doing the art. They don't want more.
