I actually had FL free, and I liked doing it but between having a shortish song length and not a lot of samples I never did get into it.

All I ended up doing was making about 12 seconds of something "okay" because that's all I could really do.

yeah, having a good variety of synth's and samples goes a long way. and different ones go better with different genre's. by the time i actually got around to writing my first song (soundcloud.com/azuredash/flutterhouse this one... totally not shamelessly promoting myself) i had spent nearly two months making short bits just figuring out how to use the programs

Nigga.

I remember seeing ableton when I was looking into starting that kind of thing, though it isn't what I went with.

Mostly because outside of beginner price range.

true that. my first was lmms witch is basically a not as powerful free version of FL. actually had a friend hook me up with ableton a short time after. (cant say I'd ever pay $800 for a program i didnt know how to use)

but using that one ball to learn to fly means you can also use ki after that point thus you can now fly around the world and blast things and get the other six then fight for the seventh
