We dont mention seconds because its an insignificant amount of time to the average person. We do however say "Thirty past six" fx, because that makes sense. Using the stated reasoning for the American calendar, it should be "Its six and thirty minutes", since the minute number can be higher than the hour number.

Its got nothing to do with the clock and everything to do with language. Im danish, and in my own language you would say "25 minutter over 6" which translates as "25 minutes past 6"

As for the 5:42 you mentioned, once you are past the halfway point you start saying, fx in this case "18 minutes to 6" or "A quarter to 6" if you arent too bothered about being exact.

Im saying that it being "six thirty" in english is a just as likely to be a symptom of the american way to pronounce time, whether it be calender times or clock times. Citing the way you say clock time in english as a reason for the calender arrangement not being silly thus doesnt really help.

its the exact same though. thats the way you say it, thats the way you write it. you say "september 20", you dont say "the 20th of september" in everyday conversation. therefore, you write september 20, 2015.

The reason you say it like that, is because you write it like that. In my language, we DO say it as "The 20th of September", and I have a feeling the reason everyone else uses a day/month/year system, is because it makes more sense, and because of it they say it like that as well.
