id love to be that optimistic but you have 20 people in a poor area of mississippi where half of them probably can't read and they're ignorant enough to beat the hell out of a white person just for being there. Gonna go out on a limb that they aren't exactly upstanding citizens and most of them are probably unemployed or drug dealers

Oh fucking joy. I covered less than half of tuition and still have to pay for housing and food on top of the other half of tuition (unless I'm going to a shit community college that no well paying job is going to take seriously).

I believe that everybody should get the chance to make something of themselves and that's not possible with the American school system since you need to either have above average intelligence or have special talents in sports to actually have a shot at getting a scholarship. If everybody could go to college they could choose to work hard to achieve their goals or get a low paying job. When you say that free education is "getting everything handed to you on a silver platter" it sounds like you think that some magical force does all the studying for you, but that's not how it works. If you want to be a doctor or a psychiatrist you have to work hard for several years and not just party or play video games 24/7.
#511 - ncsutroll (07/06/2014) [-]
I understand fully seeing as how I have a degree, that being said in many schools around the country kids can barely get through highschool and many of them don't give a shit. you give those same kids the option to go fuck around through college and it devalues the accomplishments of everybody else. You don't have to be from a rich family to go to college, paying loans back sucks, but it gives people who want the education bad enough a way to do it regardless of their background.
#482 - theXsjados (07/05/2014) [-]
Actually with the way the system works now it's fairly easy for a disadvantaged student to get access to higher education in America.

For 4 year college you have to take a lot of debt but it's worth it, and 2 year colleges (community) are basically free.

Government and local grants cover most of the costs and they're not awarded based on academic success but on need. The government estimates the amount of money your family can provide for your education and pays the difference, up to $6,000 a year. For a community college, or even a university, that is the cost of tuition.

A majority of school's cost comes from housing. It costs almost (if not more than) 10k a year to room at my current college. For that I had to take out loans, but if I lived nearby I could have just continued to live with my parents.

I was third highest in my class with a gpa of 99.8.

I got one scholarship along with anybody else who got a 90 average or higher. That scholarship pays about 2 and a half grand a semester.
That's literally about 1/5 of tuition a semester at a half decent college.

If I was the valedictorian or salutatorian, I may have gotten a better scholarship, but considering the fact that neither the val or sal took ap credits in high school, I ended up with the short end of the stick for "working hard."

Hell, even the val and sal had to take out student loans at my school because I didn't go to a private school because my parents aren't filthy rich.

tl;dr You're fucking retarded. You don't know the situations of others. Check your privilege. I've always wanted to say that. Bitch.
#512 - ncsutroll (07/06/2014) [-]
what kind of fucked GPA system are you in based out of 100? 2.5 grand covers about 30-40% of many state schools tuitions which would reduce your loans quite a bit (except up north where everything is ridiculously expensive). There are hundreds of programs out there where you can apply and compete for scholarships. Are they full rides? no, but a few hundred bucks or a grand here and there adds up. Financial Aid gives people the option to be able to go. If you go virtually all on loans for 4 years and then major in humanities that's a personal problem. Other than that it's worth the cost

#261 - ncsutroll (07/05/2014) [-]
Can everybody? no. But everybody also doesn't have the drive to do what needs to be done to get those scholarships and grants. If it's your only way to higher education and you don't even so much as attempt to obtain them, then you didn't need to go anyways. There are plenty of ways to make a living here through trade without the need to go to college
