Looks like we hit the reply limit, but it was good talking to another NC survivor. Hope Winston doesn't scare you off when you're around for the convention.

That's some bull, sorry that happened to ya. Bad drivers make me rage so damn hard. Did the insurance at least go through? I got hit by a 19 year old who was texting, speeding, and ran through a red light to hit me while I was pulling out of work. But because I was the one pulling out onto the main street, it was my fault. We both had cheap cars and the same insurance carrier so they were basically like "fuck it, we'll pay for both of ya, raise both your fees but only by a little since it's both of you, and don't screw up again."

Man all we have on my side of town are tweenage high schoolers and really old country folks, so people are always weaving between the lanes and doing half the speed limit or double it. If you're gonna share the road with anybody you've either got to be really lucky or really good to avoid getting wrecked out here.

sounds about right. got rear ended in august and the ladys excuse was that she "had to sneeze" and you cant keep your eyes open while your sneezing.. so that justified slamming in to me at 45mph when it had been stop and go traffic for 10 minutes in her eyes apparently

I knew a guy from Cary, it sounds like a nice Northern-style suburban sprawl. The kinda place you'd go to buy a house with a white picket fence and have two kids and a dog. Raleigh sounds like a decent place to be, a little bit of something for everyone.

Haha yeah, just stay in the right parts of the main city and you'll be fine. Most of the big events happen on the line between the decent and sketchy parts of town, so visitors have an awful time getting around. Otherwise it's not a bad place to live. I hear Raleigh's pretty good all-around.

Sounds about right. When you're in the Buena Vista/Arts District area it's all nice and historic, but then when you cross the train tracks and get into the other kind of downtown and "historic" district, it gets pretty nasty. And then there's the suburbs like Old Town and Bethania and Pfafftown, just lots of grass and spurts of mini-woods and ranch style houses. Not exactly nice houses but definitely not trashy. We're a pretty average city.

I went to school with some people from Fuquay just outside of Raleigh, it sounds like a pretty nice place. Can't go anywhere without bumping into someone from Charlotte, and I lived in Greensboro for a year. Say what you want about Winston, you're probably right, but Greensboro went straight down the shitter in just the year I spent out there. Kinda funny since Winston's downtown got cleaned up a lot.

I never knew we had a fishing rod convention...

It's kind of an advantage because you can side with whatever group you need to and you'll blend right in. Yankees being a prick? Oh, I've lived here my entire life I'm an NC man. Rednecks pulling a Westboro? Hey man, that's not me. I don't even have an accent!

Not to mention I can get away with wearing paint-stained flannel and blue jeans during the week, and nice chinos and a pea coat during the weekend.

sounds about right. got rear ended in august and the ladys excuse was that she "had to sneeze" and you cant keep your eyes open while your sneezing.. so that justified slamming in to me at 45mph when it had been stop and go traffic for 10 minutes in her eyes apparently

Looks like we hit the reply limit, but it was good talking to another NC survivor. Hope Winston doesn't scare you off when you're around for the convention.
#383 - ncsutroll (12/03/2013) [-]
haha sounds good bud shouldn't be too bad, 95% of the other people there will be 50-60 years old or more but that is the price I pay for my hobby
User avatar #379 - dermustang (12/03/2013) [-]
That's some bull, sorry that happened to ya. Bad drivers make me rage so damn hard. Did the insurance at least go through? I got hit by a 19 year old who was texting, speeding, and ran through a red light to hit me while I was pulling out of work. But because I was the one pulling out onto the main street, it was my fault. We both had cheap cars and the same insurance carrier so they were basically like "fuck it, we'll pay for both of ya, raise both your fees but only by a little since it's both of you, and don't screw up again."

People just assume I'm from Michigan or Vermont because I don't have an accent and half the people down here haven't lived here more than a few years. I guess this is what you get when you cross Carolina with North. Honestly though, I just don't get how we manage that perfect 50/50 ratio of local country boys to drop-in yankees.
#343 - ncsutroll (12/03/2013) [-]
its crazy. I only really get an accent when I'm talking to other people with country accents otherwise you'd never know
User avatar #346 - dermustang (12/03/2013) [-]
It's kind of an advantage because you can side with whatever group you need to and you'll blend right in. Yankees being a prick? Oh, I've lived here my entire life I'm an NC man. Rednecks pulling a Westboro? Hey man, that's not me. I don't even have an accent!

Not to mention I can get away with wearing paint-stained flannel and blue jeans during the week, and nice chinos and a pea coat during the weekend.
#350 - ncsutroll (12/03/2013) [-]
true its nice to be able to side wherever you need to.. that being said most people don't mess with me i fit the "corn fed country boy" mold quite well
User avatar #352 - dermustang (12/03/2013) [-]
Whatever works. I'm a skinny suburbanite so I'm a little more on the "foreign" side of things. I got some ghetto hoodrats down the street, some trailer trash over there, some good ole boys right here, and some friendly-ish Yanks right next door. Winston Salem is a hell of a place.
#353 - ncsutroll (12/03/2013) [-]
I'm in raleigh... my condolences for living in winston. I'll be there in february for the national fishing rod building convention though haha
User avatar #354 - dermustang (12/03/2013) [-]
I went to school with some people from Fuquay just outside of Raleigh, it sounds like a pretty nice place. Can't go anywhere without bumping into someone from Charlotte, and I lived in Greensboro for a year. Say what you want about Winston, you're probably right, but Greensboro went straight down the shitter in just the year I spent out there. Kinda funny since Winston's downtown got cleaned up a lot.

I never knew we had a fishing rod convention...
#360 - ncsutroll (12/03/2013) [-]
yep the biggest one around. winston is interesting in how some areas are really nice, some areas are hood as shit, and some are kinda in between. havent been there in at least 4-5 years so it could be nicer than i recall... greensboro is definitely going downhill very quickly
User avatar #365 - dermustang (12/03/2013) [-]
Sounds about right. When you're in the Buena Vista/Arts District area it's all nice and historic, but then when you cross the train tracks and get into the other kind of downtown and "historic" district, it gets pretty nasty. And then there's the suburbs like Old Town and Bethania and Pfafftown, just lots of grass and spurts of mini-woods and ranch style houses. Not exactly nice houses but definitely not trashy. We're a pretty average city.
#366 - ncsutroll (12/03/2013) [-]
good to hear that its improved because it used to look mostly like west charlotte and wadesboro's lovechild
User avatar #369 - dermustang (12/03/2013) [-]
Haha yeah, just stay in the right parts of the main city and you'll be fine. Most of the big events happen on the line between the decent and sketchy parts of town, so visitors have an awful time getting around. Otherwise it's not a bad place to live. I hear Raleigh's pretty good all-around.
#370 - ncsutroll (12/03/2013) [-]
its not bad. north raleigh is yankees and yuppies, east raleigh is a combination of country and built up, south (where i am) is a combination of college apartments and hoods, and west raleigh just kinda merges in to cary so lots of yankees
User avatar #371 - dermustang (12/03/2013) [-]
I knew a guy from Cary, it sounds like a nice Northern-style suburban sprawl. The kinda place you'd go to buy a house with a white picket fence and have two kids and a dog. Raleigh sounds like a decent place to be, a little bit of something for everyone.
#373 - ncsutroll (12/03/2013) [-]
yep a nice white picket fence and a couple kids and a dog dead in the road because nobody an drive worth a damn there haha

cary stands for the central area of relocated yankees
User avatar #375 - dermustang (12/03/2013) [-]
Man all we have on my side of town are tweenage high schoolers and really old country folks, so people are always weaving between the lanes and doing half the speed limit or double it. If you're gonna share the road with anybody you've either got to be really lucky or really good to avoid getting wrecked out here.

You may not respect Obama for political reasons but you have to respect the office of the president. Obama has, to the best of his ability and in the face of particularity uncooperative officials, carried out the duties of the president. He has passed laws, he has forged international agreements, he's skirted conflict in the middle east and he's put up with a higher amount of bull from his congress than a president in recent history.

Whatever your political alignment, you have to respect the fact that Obama has done remarkable well carrying out the duties of the presidency given such harsh abuse pf the political from the minority party.
