On the American Frontier, people still had morals. They were instilled with values of Christianity, and on top of that there was still the fact that there was SOME order in place at the time. But you're right that many people just want peace and security. But it's not like only those with mental illness or some deep rooted hatred would do immoral things. In the modern world, sociopaths function fairly well, but in a true anarchy, such as if there were a large scale disaster with little to no hope of returning the former status quo, they would be ruthless. And not just sociopaths, but anybody desperate enough would do the same, perhaps less so out of malice and/or indifference, and more so out of finding something to gain that outweighs the moral blow that they would receive for killing somebody.

I read that as "Having a lack of apathy is considered "abnormal"" because I was just about to say I'm probably over-flowing with apathy towards some legitimate things I should care for. I honestly am not sure of my own mental state but what ever, things tend to sort themselves out. Btw im also stupid as fuck so that might explain as well.

If you're playing 'spot the Atheist' then you've already lost. If we lived in a society with no punishment for murder, why wouldn't you murder? If you had a gun you could just kill a guy on the streets and take $20 from his wallet. Not saying I want Anarchy, because I don't, but if there was Anarchy I wouldn't hesitate to kill, just as I'd be cautious because others would want to kill me.

We're a species of animal. We desire above all else to stay alive, or to ensure that our young survive. Any other feelings are the construct of society.
User avatar #118 - nathiuz (09/05/2014) [-]
I disagree. I believe that people mostly keep their promises and honor their obligations by their nature (not necessarily by society's enforcement). I would suggest that the American frontier is a good example where relative lack of society can be relatively peaceful. Strangers who wandered onto land in the frontier were not usually "shot and stolen from" as you suggest. I will allow that places such as the American frontier is a rather insecure place, and that there were violent conflicts, I would also suggest that people in general are in a state of peace, if they had the option. By and large, I think your thinking is along that of thinkers like Hobbes and Ayn Rand, neither of which I'm able to agree with on multiple basis.

Having a lack of empathy is considered "abnormal", and considered a cause for alarm in the field of psychology.

This is all without even addressing religion.
