I think you could do without raising taxes on all the people, however. Or, if you do, make sure that key social services remain.

If you were to nationalise some key sectors, you could more easily lower debt.

Sigh... just because a government directed business fails, that doesn't mean that everything should be private. Private businesses fail, and then they're bought out. That's how things are fixed in the free market. There are other ways to fix public companies, as well, but require nationalisation to be done properly and effectively.

And you pay taxes, but your taxes are thus combined with the money of other taxpayers, which does reduce the individual burden on you. Say you're going to hospital, and your operation costs $100, but you've been paying $10 extra in taxes for absolutely free healthcare. Small, regular payments of $10 are easier to manage than a sudden $100 cost.

That's just a very basic example...
User avatar #10196 - natedizzie (10/08/2012) [-]
I understand that not everything can be private their are programs every american needs and cannot be private. but programs like the post office can be privatized.
And that method works till a lot of the population is not paying taxes and placing a higher tax burden on you. yeah there is the safety in knowing you will not pay for the doctor but in societies that are bottom heavy it is disproportionate tax burdens on the rest.
User avatar #10198 - oxan (10/08/2012) [-]
Whoops. I /just/ realised that I replied to the wrong post with the wrong message.

Haha, anyway.

If you tax, and apply the taxes properly, the end result should be an increased income for the taxpayer, by the increased amount of social services and subsidies. Thus, taxpayers can now pay more on consumer goods and such.

The problem is, especially in the US, is that money is not spent appropriately, and the social services in the US are operated poorly, especially healthcare.

Countries such as Scandinavian ones are operating their social services more effectively, and are very wealthy countries for their size, with excellent standards of living. Even Australia, where we have comprehensive, but sometimes poorly planned social services, comes in at second for highest standard of living.

It just has to be directed effectively.

If you clean that up a little, and make a few alterations, and of course, go into more detail, that will work.

Of course the only way to have a successful government is with compromise
like lincoln said "A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure, permanently, half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved — I do not expect the house to fall — but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing or all the other. Either the opponents of slavery will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become alike lawful in all the States, old as well as new"
Replace slavery and free with conservative and liberal and it's the same thing lol
If you dont learn from history you're doomed to repeat it

Anon answers the first two things

> Germany is the 4th greatest economic power, greatest economic power in all of Europe. They haven't been to war since WWII, and they have a very stable and good country now. In fact, my cousin, my wife, and I are all moving to Germany because it's better than the U.S. (no offence to the US). After WWI everyone was poor, it was terrible, they needed someone to blame, so when Hitler offered a solution, and used his amazing powers of speech, they really had two choices: Suffering and poverty for the rest of their lives, or go along with it. You forgot the fact that without WWII, no nuclear weapons would have been invented, and therefore the world would still be at war, rather than nuclear stalemate, and countless wars would have raged by now, you forgot that without the Holocaust, Israel would have never been created. You do realize that without the Holocaust, numerous technological advancements would have never been made, and the United States would have never become a world power, and therefore, the world would not be near as good as it is (admit it, as much as we all hate the US, it contributed endlessly to modern society forming the way it has). And yes, Germany has had extremely brilliant leaders. They're brilliant innovators and leaders and people, the problem mainly lying within the fact that they keep to themselves and don't dick themselves in other peoples business. And the couple times they do something wrong, everybody decides to point "OH LOOK THEY DID SOMETHING WRONG!" Don't be such an ignorant dumbass, and don't make fun of one of this world's best countries.
User avatar #577 - trololoface (10/07/2012) [-]
So your saying

The Holocaust made the world a better place
#580 - Fgner (10/07/2012) [-]
As much as all of us hate to admit it...
yes.

I'm ready to embrace red thumbs for this viewpoint, but think about it. Without WWII, the world would have maintained it's economic depression, if not fallen even deeper in it, for quite some time. This would have halted all progress on all fronts, as the world would struggle to recover. Because the wars never existed, then America would have never gained any power, and would have remained isolated and in their own depressions. This would remove the world's new central hub. Because Japan was never attacked by the U.S. the modernization of their country would have never occurred (as well as numerous others). Now imagine a world without Japan, already pretty shitty, am I right? But without the unifying central hub, the world wouldn't have come together in unity near as quickly, as European nations struggled and fought for the right to be so. Already locked into major stressors, war would have broken out eventually, this time the Holocaust would not have existed to make a two sided war, it would be full out European-War, and would most likely end in just as great, if not greater death tolls and losses than WWII. After such a war, almost the same timeline would play out, Europe requires resources, imports from America, America gets rich, America becomes hub, bibbidy bobbidy boo - modern society, but 50 years later.
User avatar #581 - trololoface (10/07/2012) [-]
Oh yeah, because if WWII never happened, then the world would have ceased to modernize and we would still be masturbating to rocks
User avatar #586 - Fgner (10/07/2012) [-]
World-wide economic depression does that kind of thing.
User avatar #593 - trololoface (10/07/2012) [-]
Then how come today, even in the worst economic crash since the great depression, and this is happening not just in the US, we are still inventing and moving on?

It was the same after WWI, even the most simple inventions were made, such as toasters, traffic lights, the rocket, lie detector, ect..

The Great Depression didn't stop anybody from making things, so if the Holocaust would have never happened, then we would have still moved on...

But seriously, who the fuck considerers the Holocaust a good thing?
Sure this is the internet, and people say stupid shit like this all the time, but your actually defending this.

Now go say this to somebody in real life if you truly believe in this.

And join the Nazi Party of America while your at it
User avatar #601 - Fgner (10/07/2012) [-]
1) Because this is modern society, where we borrow 5 trillion dollars to throw at people saying "SPEND IT HOW YOU WILL JUST DO OUR JOB AND MAKE THINGS BETTER" We spend money we don't have and act like it's normal. Back then, when everyone was in poverty, who the living God was going to just hand out money or anything?
2) Yes it did. Name some great inventions that came out of America during the Great Depression. I can think of a few things: laundromats (hand washed - makes sense, new business = money), tampons (it's freaking cotton shoved in the vag, nothing groundbreaking), and sliced bread (I think). I'm sorry, but I don't hear the sound of post WWII progress going on there. And I don't mean right after WWI, I meant once the global depression began sinking in. You know, one of the causes of WWII.
3) The Holocaust is bad - WWII is good. However, Holocaust was a part of WWII, and by extension is good.
4) I'm not defending the Holocaust directly. I'm not defending Nazi'ism. I'm defending the fact that those two DID cause accelerated steps toward modern society and a prevention of a major global collapse. We can't change the fact that the Holocaust happened, and it was bad, but is it truly wrong to look at the positive sides of things for once?
5) I have told people in real life, but they understand I'm not supporting the Holocaust, but addressing the positive factors that were on the other side of the coin. Everything has another side, don't be so one-dimensional.

Don't forget that ever since Obama took office, we have:
-another 6 trillion dollars in debt, more than any past Presidents.
-Record amount of people on food stamps(47 million)
-Record amount of people on welfare check
-high unemployment rate, longest unemployment over 8%
-bad economy, slowest/worse economy recovery.
-Worst deficits in American history
I can add more. I don't think America can handle another 4 years of Obama.

If you make your own power then no, like you said you actually get money back if you make more than you use.
but if you buy it from the grid you will pay regardless of source.
until they master cold fusion you'd probably pay a similar rate regardless of it being coal, hydro, solar, gas.

The reason electricity can cost so much is that most places are served by one company that has a local monopoly. The government regulates them enough so that you don't get completely fucked over, but they still charge a little more because they can. With solar power, anyone can make/sell/install solar panels, there will be a lot more competition, so it will get cheaper and more efficient. We have the technology to start progressing in that area, but there's no real motivation yet.
