reason we left our colonies was the extreme aggression after the second world war
everyone wanted independence and we were sinking in war debt

so be did the one thing we could, cut our loses. Then all the dictators too over and threw out all the industrial owners and western workers. this leading to economic problems or arm dictator ships. An example of this is Zimbabwe.

But now we have corrupt politics trying control the middle east, so its only going to get worse and may even cause a 3rd world war

Also remember the luxury resources give a boost to happiness, and every specialist in a city generates unhappiness. I find the if you just let the ai decide if the city should have specialist it will often have some in every city the result being alot of unhappiness.

I don't think I have DLC and I just play on normal. I keep waiting to get better at the game but I can't past the stupid happiness hurdle.
User avatar #19 - muffinofrage (12/08/2013) [-]
There are some civs that come with ways to deal with unhappiness, but I'm not sure which come in the dlc so you may not have them. Ghandi has a passive that halves population unhappiness and doubles city unhappiness which is good for a low number of cities. One of my favorites is Arabia because it comes with the Bazaar that gives you an extra copy of a luxury in your territory so that you always have a bargaining chip for either trading excess luxuries with other civs and if you are in the positive with happiness they sell for an average of 7.5 GPT each (civs round decimals down so trade in pairs for more money.) I don't know how you play but always trade away excess luxuries. Also city states can give some unique luxuries as well. There are also some good social policies that can greatly help with your problem, personally I think liberty has a great early on policy.
User avatar #8 - nass (12/08/2013) [-]
Hmm , there are 3 simple strategies, but I'm not sure if they work that well without the DLCs :

a) many small cities - keep them low for a long time , try to aquire lots of resources and focus on culture to expand very fast. When you have a lot of happiness max the citygrowth in late game and voila: Big cities and happiness.

b) 3-5 cities, try to limit the growth a little bit. You can start the growing earlier than in a) . This is not always the best strategy , more a solid mix of everything.

c) one big city. You need a lot of research so you can get new technologies with happiness. In the end you will have a huge city with lots of culture and research, but less production than other ppl. Your advantage in science will still be big enough for defending.

This is of course very general , but remember: building a city brings a certain amount of unhappiness and citizens too. You need to keep the balance. And always try to trade with other countries or do quests for citystates, they'll grant you luxury resources !

b) 3-5 cities

Uhh... wow. I'm just calling out red thumbers for the fun of it- Wasn't expecting such an answer.

It's just that last year in school I was stuck with a shitload of assholes, y'know. Granted, I've made a joke or two which was uncalled for, but not directly towards them, more joking around with a friend on FB. Just bothers me that they always reacted so violent to pretty much everything. Realized now that it was pretty dickish of me but there's no need to cry over spilled milk, I guess.

Wow, now I feel like a dick.

You're having your very own lockdown of a sort then? That's a bummer. How's that thing about trying to make kids stay in school longer going, I accidentally stumbled upon a political speak of sorts during my stay. They were fighting against the people who wanted school to go longer for kids.

It's been cold and snowy in my part of the US.

I don't know to what you are exactly refering. These kind of things are mostly regional , I live up in the North so I don't know what's goin on in the other parts. There is this ongoing discussion about the Gymnasiums (Highschools) :

In the old system you needed 9 years to complete (13 including primary school) . They introduced a new system , called G8 (Gymnasium8) in which you need 8 years to complete. This means the pupils have to stay longer in school at ages of 10, for example from 7:45 til 15:15 everyday , having no opportunities for playing with friends , doing sport and stuff like this.

You need to know that, although everbody thinks Germany is so rich, cause it's economy is so strong, the cities are all broke, having to cut expenses like schools , hospitals and universities. Thats why they introduced G8 . Luckily my school is 1 of the 11 Gymansiums In Germany that kept the old system , so school is more relaxing and you have more free time.

Well, it's cold and rainy, the politicans don't know what to do right now and still (for over a month) arguing about the leadership of the country. Quite complicated, cause no one has a real partner and a gouverment with less than 50% in the parliament is just impossible to lead. But I'd say it's still fine here
