Actually, I think anthracite coal keeps the mine burning, because it burns really slowly, and it's really hard to ignite (but once it's on fire, it's really hard to put out). After the coal burns away, the holes left in the ground cause roads to collapse.
The boy in the story, dangling above the hole, held on to a tree root until help arrived.

After commenting I realized there were several stories of children playing somewhere and falling in holes... and that I mixed 2 of them up...
I don't remember reading anything about the coal, but you might be right. I have no other explanation for the fact that it keeps burning.
