Well, this didn't go the way he expected it to at all. However I do feel that you are missing something about Freddie. It's not just that his voice was one of the best ever to hit the stage nor that his music alongside the rest of Queen aged well. That would be the easy answer.

Freddie had charisma. He was completely overflowing with it, more so than most artists before or since. He could throw random notes into the audience and they would repeat them back to him, no matter how balmy they were, because they came from him. He commanded such respect with the content of his music, his conduct onstage and his kindness and generosity offstage that he became a role-model for thousands and the mark he left on history is still fresh in the minds of many.

Though he may not be as big in the US as he is in many other countries round the world, his music continues to unite people in their love of it.

To put this in a little perspective. Live Aid was the biggest event ever to hit television. It was broadcast all over the world and held a gathering of the biggest stars of the era. Back then, Queen were still 'just another band'. However they came on and stole the show and continue to be the most memorable act out of the bunch and, just as happened with the Green Day concert, uniting the audience in one big song.

It's not the only time that's happened (after all, at the London Olympics Elbow got 80,000 people singing 'A day like this' in what is one of the most moving moments of olympic history) but it remains one of the most significant.

I appreciate that you may not think Freddie is anything special, but do understand why other people think he's special. Why they love him. And if you think he's nothing special then I do honestly want to know the people who stand up above him because frankly, they sound like musicians I should really listen to.

True, but being an awesome person doesn't grant him the title of being special or a great artists.
I understand why people think that way, but I think it's a terrible argument for calling him special or making him the greatest.
User avatar #104 - snowshark (06/17/2013) [-]
Also, I'd argue that Vincent Van Gough's work is only enhanced by understanding how his psychology went into the paintings. How his lonely and tortured mind created such stunning art that we still regard him as one of the greats today even though he was considered worthless in his own time.

Similarly, there is a lot of Freddie in his own songs (though to say it was all him is to betray the artistic influence of the rest of the band which I personally find distasteful.)
User avatar #103 - snowshark (06/17/2013) [-]
Well, how do you define a great artist and who do you personally feel stands above him?

I feel that the person singing the song very much impacts the song itself, regardless of performance. Mitt Romney singing a black slave-song just doesn't fit, no matter how good the song itself is. Along that same vein, Freddie singing his songs fits so well. When you hear him you also know that the man you're listening to is an inspiration to many and is widely considered one of, if not the best musician of the past 100 years, if not longer.

That may just be me, mind, as who the person singing the song is adds a lot to my interpretation of the overall performance.

Still, you seem to have some men in your mind who are more worthy musicians than he and I really am gagging by this point because frankly... if they're that good I just really wanna hear them.
