Are you stupid? You don't need to SWING a one-edged blade, you can stab with it well enough, and when your're done, retract it, if needed, you can turn the sharp edge towards a stupid ass fucker trying to get past the blade and cut the fool.

2. Mentally/emotionally using a bladed weapon against someone isn't as easy as it looks

a couple problems with this:

it is more likely that these are replica weapons and the katana is made of better steel than it was historically, as well as how the traditional technique of folding the steel has been lost forever, just like damascus steel forging. And the longsword could be made of poorer quality steel than it was historically.

while longsword did replace arming swords due to the introduction of full plate, a mace, lucerne, or warhammer could finish the job much more efficiently. gunny also tried to put the longsword through the center of the chest plate, the part of the plate where the most force is dispersed hardly the weak point he mentioned they were normally aimed at earlier.
