When sirens go off, all lights are red.

emergency vehicles have the right of way.
#42 - xbyronx (11/03/2014) [-]
How about its from a fucking movie so it doesn't matter. Also, sirens permit officers to run red lights and it is citizen responsibility to stop where ever they are or pull to the side.
User avatar #84 - deadbyapril (11/03/2014) [-]
False, Officer has to yield no matter what.
User avatar #99 - xbyronx (11/03/2014) [-]
Not true at all, the officer only has to yield if it is not a life endangering emergency. There was no clear tell in this gif, but again, its from a fucking movie.
#43 - thedeliveryguy (11/03/2014) [-]
A cop, even with the sirens and lights, are supposed to yield before going through a red light because it is impossible to stop sometimes.
User avatar #69 - grimsho (11/03/2014) [-]
That's why the cop is going like 15 mph in the picture.
User avatar #45 - grrphc (11/03/2014) [-]

Conservation Officer here, and I can assure you we are taught to ensure it's safe before going through a red light. When driving, if we believe we have to break the law on duty, it is our responsibility to ensure we do so safely.
User avatar #52 - grrphc (11/03/2014) [-]
So two "officers" on this thread saying opposing things. Wonder who is telling the truth.
#55 - willys (11/03/2014) [-]
Well miwauturu is an actual officer and is talking good sense. That byron guy below says he's in training and linked to a law that has nothing to do with going through red lights. I'll go ahead and believe miwauturu.

Fair enough, team miwauturu wins.
User avatar #64 - xbyronx (11/03/2014) [-]
It is true, I am only in law school and traffic school at the moment, I have yet to attend the police academy. I am getting a degree in criminal justice first. Miwauturu probably has more experience, as I have only been on ride alongs and done "clinical hours" for the department. But laws very country to country and state to state and often on county levels and sometimes differ by the street. So it is to hard to call.
#67 - miwauturu (11/03/2014) [-]
Canada by the way. Also fairly new to the whole thing too, not been on the job long. Even though we were taught pursuit laws, Conservation Officers have a no pursuit policy here. Best we are allowed to do is follow at speed to get the license, and add failed to stop to whatever charge they may already have.
#53 - miwauturu (11/03/2014) [-]
Probably depends on where each one comes from, different countries, different laws.

You linked to a law talking about moving over on the highway for stopped emergency vehicles on the side of the road. I really hope you're very early on in your training and/or you never hold a LEO job anywhere near me.

If a cop blares through a red light at 80mph and kills someone, they don't get out of it just because their siren was on. You'd have to be stupid to think that's how it works.
#58 - xbyronx (11/03/2014) [-]
Also, as the very FIRST line would suggest "A move over law is a law which requires motorists to move over and change lanes to give safe clearance to law enforcement officers." This pertains to numerous areas, as well as excluding numerous areas. This also lists multiple laws but you say 'law' as if it is singular. I seriously hope you never teach an English class, because you are not great at it.
#60 - willys (11/03/2014) [-]
Moving over a lane has nothing to do with red lights. Stop being an idiot and an asshole.
User avatar #57 - xbyronx (11/03/2014) [-]
No, obviously not. But in certain circumstances it is allowed. As well as the law I linked has several, several attaches to other laws, and it is a global page that includes Canada and such. I was just giving an example of scenarios in which you are supposed to "move over" for law enforcement.
#59 - willys (11/03/2014) [-]
Going through a red light is allowed with the siren on. People are required to move over for stopped emergency vehicles and pull to the right and completely stop for moving emergency vehicles. We're not arguing that, bud. But a cop is required to slow down and ensure that it is safe to proceed through a red light before doing so. Otherwise, they are risking killing innocent people by potentially no fault of the innocent person. Please please please tell me you don't think that's ok for a cop to do...
#145 - willys (11/03/2014) [-]
Gotta love FJ's mob mentality.
User avatar #61 - xbyronx (11/03/2014) [-]
Okay I think you completely misunderstand my argument. I am not saying that the cop was right. never did I, I said this was a god damned seen from a movie and in certain circumstances, like with first checking, an officer can proceed through an intersection.
#62 - willys (11/03/2014) [-]
"A cop, even with the sirens and lights, are supposed to yield before going through a red light because it is impossible to stop sometimes."

This is the comment you first responded to with the wiki link saying "Not where I am".

Yield means slow down and ensure it is clear before proceeding.

So wouldn't you then agree that the first comment is actually correct and maybe you misunderstood the argument that they were making?
User avatar #63 - xbyronx (11/03/2014) [-]
No, I know what yield means, I am simply saying where I am, it is not required to stop or yield in the state of an emergency with sirens etc. on.

Thumbed you up because you know what you're talking about.

For everyone wondering this cop is at fault. Now I didn't see the movie but the assumption I'm making from the gif is that the cop just ran the light. The cop can not do this, no matter the situation and whether or not they had their siren going. They have to yield at a red light or stop sign.

For the doubters....

(b) The driver of an authorized emergency vehicle, when responding to an emergency call, fire alarm or in the pursuit of an actual or suspected violator of the law, may:

1.Park or stand, irrespective of the provisions of this chapter.
2.Proceed past a red or stop signal or stop sign,but only after slowing down as necessary for safe operation;
3.Exceed the maximum speed limits if life or property are not thereby endangered.
4.Disregard regulations governing direction of movement or turning in specific directions.

This is taken directly from emergency vehicle law. Now like I said haven't seen the movie yet so I could be wrong but considering it's a fucking movie, fuck laws right?
#95 - anonymous (11/03/2014) [-]
That doesn't mean they have to stop, it just means that if there's a car on the green side still going, it's probably in the best interest of the cop's to slow down, and that the civilian isn't at fault if what is depicted happens.

That's the "as necessary" part of that section

Honestly I just enjoyed that Colbert criticized this being an issue at all. Also Anita left with her panties in a wad so I enjoy that tidbit as well.

Who honestly gives two shits about the feminist agenda with regards to gaming? Nobody. There does exist sexism in this world as well as violence against women, but picking out gamers as the proprietors of this is absolute bullshit. Go complain about real problems like in the Middle East.

Who honestly gives a shit about ethics in gaming media? Nobody. This implies that gaming journalist was ever ethical, worthwhile, informative, or not cancer. All Gamergate has managed to do is give feminists some footing in the industry to complain about misogyny. Nobody likes having their hobby and lifestyle targeted, but I don't see this movement as a solution.

Kthxbai.
User avatar #147 - murphypop (10/31/2014) [-]
I give a shit about ethics in gaming media, and I don't enjoy the issue being hijacked by radical feminists who try to force out the ethics issue altogether.

Don't get me wrong: there are plenty of sexist video games to fuel the gender argument. But when this issue first came to light, it was about unfair funding and media coverage in exchange for "favors": nepotism. I definitely think that there are some valid points made by the less extreme feminists, but I hate that the original issue is getting trampled by the gender issue.
