Pretty sure Mass Effect isn't a Japanese RPG (correct me if I'm wrong). Also, I haven't played Mass Effect.

I don't know if I'd even consider either of those RPGs.
User avatar #224 - indecisivejew (05/23/2013) [-]
You do know what an RPG is, right? Its a role playing game. It allows you to make a character how you see fit so that you as a player can play a role. And seeing as how you can actually do that to a much greater extent in Mass Effect and Fallout than you can in a game like Magna Carta where you play the story of a already established characters with little impactful choices, Mass Effect and Fallout have much more of a right to call themselves RPGs. Hell, Walking Dead is more of an RPG than a lot of Final Fantasy esque JRPGs.
#227 - zeedeveel (05/23/2013) [-]
What an RPG is by definition and what an RPG is to a gamer are two completely different things.
User avatar #232 - indecisivejew (05/23/2013) [-]
You using a term improperly does not make you right. Mass Effect and Fallout are absolutely, unequivocally RPGs by every definition. They are designed around Role Playing, and they use traditional systems of RPG stat progression and leveling up. The distinction you are looking for is between Japanese RPGs that you seem to favor and Western RPGs, like ME and Fallout.
#241 - zeedeveel (05/23/2013) [-]
They're as much an RPG as Borderlands maybe but I'd consider them a lot closer to the FPS end.
User avatar #254 - indecisivejew (05/23/2013) [-]
Have you played fallout? 3 and New Vegas were the only ones that featured First Person shooting, and you had the option to play in third person or to simply use weapons other than guns the whole time. It was as much a FPS as God of War is a puzzle game.

And obviously you don't know what FIRST PERSON is if you think Mass Effect falls in that category.

Why don't you give your definition of FPS and RPG? Because clearly they are something much more complicated than the actual definitions of First Person Shooter and Role Playing Game.

#258 - zeedeveel (05/23/2013) [-]
I apologize, Third Person Shooter. I was doing a sweeping generalization. I played the earlier Fallouts and they were great in a Diablo-esque sense The problem is that 3 came out around the time that dumb people were generally becoming gamers. They drastically shifted everything, RPGs transformed into some FPS sub-genre, Sqare-Enix began to have to fight to stay relevant. It became a mess. To me, an RPG is something immersive that lets you take the role of a character and causes you to have genuine feelings for these characters. An FPS is almost anything first person that allows you to shoot. I said that Borderlands was probably the best FPS sadly because it was the only likable game I could think of on 360 with any sort of RPG system.
User avatar #262 - indecisivejew (05/23/2013) [-]
I guess we're at an impass then. I'll tell you though, even by your definition, I think Mass Effect, Fallout, and even Walking Dead have more elements that make them actual role playing games than most JRPGs that Squareenix and the like make. That does not in any way make JRPGs bad, it just irks me that people seem to confuse role playing games with games that happen to allow you to level up stats.
#266 - zeedeveel (05/23/2013) [-]
Walking Dead, Fallout and Mass Effect are just that to me though, games that offer a leveling system and nothing else. None of those really had captivating stories (As far as I'm concerned) RPGs were once a thing that offered you an escape. Now, the title is given to games undeserving.
User avatar #271 - indecisivejew (05/23/2013) [-]
Wow. I guess you just REALLY don't like western stories then. All of those games had very elaborate and dynamic stories that were designed to get you invested in the characters and to respond to your choices. If you don't respond to them, I guess that's your thing, but for most people, they still definitely offer captivating stories and an escape from reality. Myself included.

that being said, I just re-read the "as in japanese RPG" part... I dont play japanese RPG

Meh your complaints are relevant and understandable. It's not like you just started whining on a random content to get attention, or to spew some emo bullshit about how no one understands you or something. What you're doing is probably the best solution, maybe not the most satisfying, but it keeps your family a little closer at a time where that's probably more important. Maybe sit down and talk to her about why that hurt you so much, if she doesn't listen, too bad, but if you can work it out that might ease some tensions.

Your sister sounds like an ungrateful and/or entitled cunt (no offense). You must be more tolerable than me because given that situation I would have started breaking shit...
User avatar #99 - murdershy (05/21/2013) [-]
None taken. I've put up with my fair share of shit. But I feel like breaking anything (preferably her face) will have no good results. Especially with her children around (who I love for the most part). So I just put up with what I can and let the meds get rid of the rest of the feels.

Sorry I'm bitching and whining on FJ btw. I sounds like some emo shit. :/
